SPEAK GENTLY – A Message from Our Practice

This beautiful old poem reminds us of something we live out every day in our work as medical Speech-Language Pathologists:

"Speak gently: 'tis a little thing
Dropped in the heart's deep well;
The good, the joy, that it may bring,
Eternity shall tell."

Whether we are supporting a stroke survivor learning to speak again, helping an elderly patient reclaim safe swallowing, or working with a patient to find their voice—our practice is built on the power of gentle, patient, purposeful communication.

Every word matters. Every interaction counts.

We believe in:

* Speaking gently to those in recovery, because healing takes time.
* Speaking gently to those who feel unheard, because communication is a human right.
* Speaking gently to families, because they carry the weight of care too.

The quiet work we do may seem small—but it can change lives.

Every now and then, a message lands in your hands that completely captures what you already know in your heart. This beautiful handwritten note from one of our families reminded us just how lucky we are to have Michelle on the BRAINWORX team.

“To the world’s best speech therapist… Thank you for all the love, care, and time you have given us. Your passion and enthusiasm shine so brightly.”

Michelle, your warmth, dedication, and relentless positivity don’t just support our patients — they uplift all of us around you. Whether it’s a tough case or a tiny breakthrough, you show up with your whole heart, and it doesn’t go unnoticed.

From all of us at BRAINWORX — and clearly from the T family — thank you for being the incredible clinician and human you are. 💛

Happy Mother’s Day
Today we honour the strength, love, and resilience of all the incredible mothers—especially those we meet through our work in medical speech therapy.
Whether you’re a mother caring for a loved one through illness, a patient showing quiet determination, or a caregiver who loves like a mother—your courage inspires us daily.

Thank you for the trust you place in us.
We celebrate you today, and always.

🌈 International Transgender Day of Visibility – March 31st 🌈

Today, we honour the courage, strength, and visibility of transgender and gender-diverse individuals around the world. This day is not only about being seen—it’s about being heard, too.

Your voice is deeply personal. It's how you connect, express, advocate, and belong. For many transgender people, aligning their voice and communication style with their gender identity is a powerful part of their journey—one that affirms who they truly are.

🎤 As medical Speech-Language Therapists, we proudly provide gender-affirming voice and communication training. Our services support transgender individuals in developing a voice that feels authentic, safe, and confident—because everyone deserves to sound like themselves.

We offer:
💬 Voice modification therapy tailored to your goals
🧠 Education and support around vocal health
🎭 Work on expression, intonation, pitch, and non-verbal communication
💡 A safe, respectful, and affirming space for every person

This work is about so much more than pitch. It’s about dignity. It’s about freedom. It’s about having a voice that finally feels like home.

On this , we stand with the trans community in solidarity, respect, and celebration. And we invite everyone to reflect on the power of voice—and the importance of creating a world where all voices are valued, respected, and free to speak.

💙 Hope Finds a Way 💙

Life can take everything from you—your health, your strength, your sense of self. A cancer diagnosis can feel like the end of the road, a battle that leaves you weary and wondering if joy will ever return.

But sometimes, just when you least expect it, love finds you.

One of my patients has walked a long and painful road. They lost so much—their health, their confidence, and the life they once knew. They struggled through treatment, fought for every meal, every word, every breath. And then, when they had nearly given up on ever feeling whole again, love appeared. A quiet, steady kind of love. One that didn’t see illness first, but a person—strong, resilient, worthy.

If you are struggling, if you feel like life has left you behind, please know this: you are not forgotten. The road may be difficult, but unexpected joy may be waiting around the next bend. Keep going. 💙

As seen on the kitchen door at a local old age home:

"Attention all ‘residence’! 🚪

The sign says 'STRICKLY' no entry — and if you're wondering, that's when “strict” and “quickly” team up for ultimate security. Guess you won’t be allowed to
sleep in the kitchen! 😂

🕊️ **International Human Rights Day** 🌍

Today, we reflect on the fundamental rights that belong to all people — including the right to communicate. In South Africa, 1 in 5 people face communication challenges, yet many lack access to Speech-Language Pathology services that can help them lead more independent lives.

SLPs are advocates for equality in healthcare, ensuring that those with speech, language, and swallowing difficulties can fully participate in society. Everyone deserves the ability to express themselves and be heard, regardless of ability.

👉 Let’s work together to create a more inclusive South Africa where everyone’s rights are respected.

🤝 It takes a village to end violence.
Community education about the impact of violence and the support services available is essential. SLPs can partner with shelters and NGOs to provide workshops on communication recovery and trauma-informed care.

👉 In particular, our association with Headway Gauteng is a cause close to our hearts. We see many victims of violence and trauma, who are piecing back together their lives, one bold step at a time. Please consider supporting their efforts by donating to this worthy cause at https://headwaygauteng.co.za

🌍 International Day for People with Disabilities 💛

In South Africa, an estimated 7.5% of the population lives with a disability, yet access to essential rehabilitation services remains limited for many. For individuals with communication or swallowing disorders caused by conditions like stroke, cerebral palsy, or traumatic brain injury, Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) provide crucial support to help them thrive.

💡 Did you know? Over 80% of people with disabilities in South Africa are unemployed, highlighting the urgent need for advocacy and inclusion. By improving communication and swallowing, SLPs empower individuals to participate fully in their communities.
