World Haemophilia Day is observed on April 17 to raise awareness about haemophilia and other inherited bleeding disorders. The 2026 theme, “Diagnosis: First step to care,” emphasizes that over 75% of individuals with hemophilia are undiagnosed.

🔴What is Hemophilia?
A rare genetic disorder where blood doesn’t clot properly due to insufficient clotting-factor proteins.
Types include Type A (Factor VIII deficiency) and Type B (Factor IX deficiency).
Primarily affects males as it is X-linked, but females can also be carriers or affected.

‼️Signs to Watch for in Kids:
1️⃣Frequent or severe nosebleeds.
2️⃣Easy or unexplained bruising.
3️⃣Swollen, painful joints.
4️⃣Prolonged bleeding from minor injuries.

❣️Living as a “Hemo Hero”:
With proper diagnosis and treatment, such as clotting factor infusions, children with hemophilia can lead active, independent lives.

Embracing Neurodiversity on World Autism Awareness Day

As a paediatrician, my days are spent witnessing the numerous ways children develop, learn, and perceive the world around them. On this World Autism Awareness Day, I want to honour the unique strengths and perspectives of our neurodivergent community.

Autism exists on a spectrum, signifying that each child’s journey is uniquely their own. This year’s UN theme, “Autism and Humanity – Every Life Has Value,” serves as a reminder that meaningful progress involves moving beyond mere “awareness” to embrace active acceptance and inclusion.

What we can do:

✅Listen & Learn: Take a moment to understand how sensory sensitivities or communication differences might impact a child’s daily experiences.
✅Advocate for Inclusion: Support inclusive environments in schools and public spaces where every child feels a sense of belonging.
✅Celebrate Milestones: To all parents and caregivers—you’re doing an amazing job. Celebrate every achievement, whether big or small.
✅Early identification and support can make a tremendous difference, but so can a community that prioritizes kindness over stigma. Let us strive to create a world where every mind is cherished for what it truly is: a masterpiece.

Is Your Child Getting the Sleep They Need? 🌙

Did you know that children who get enough sleep have improved attention, memory, and emotional regulation? On the other hand, insufficient sleep is linked to a higher risk of accidents, obesity, and even depression.

Happy World Sleep Day 💤🌙

Here is a quick guide to how much sleep (including naps) your child typically needs every 24 hours:
☑Infants (4–12 months): 12–16 hours
☑Toddlers (1–2 years): 11–14 hours
☑Preschoolers (3–5 years): 10–13 hours
☑School-Age (6–12 years): 9–12 hours
☑Teens (13–18 years): 8–10 hours
Sleep isn't just "downtime"—it’s when the brain recharges and the body grows!.

Hearing is the foundation of talking!
As a paediatrician, I frequently remind parents that children do not merely learn to speak; they learn by mimicking what they hear.
If a child's hearing is even slightly compromised, it’s akin to trying to learn a new language from a radio filled with static. They may miss important sounds such as "s," "sh," or "t," leading to:
✅ Speech delays
✅ Challenges in following directions
✅ Frustration in social interactions

Whether it’s fluid accumulation behind the ear after a cold or a more permanent hearing loss, early detection is crucial. Most speech "issues" actually stem from hearing problems! 🩺

Pro tip:* If you find yourself frequently repeating things or if your little one isn't reaching their "babbling" milestones, consider scheduling a quick check-up.

As a paediatrician, I witness the resilience of “Heart Warriors.” Congenital Heart Defects (CHDs) are the most common birth defects, affecting nearly 1 in 100 babies annually. Early detection is crucial, with signs to watch for in infants including cyanosis, rapid breathing, poor feeding, and failure to thrive. In older children, symptoms may include fatigue during play, shortness of breath, and swelling in extremities. Awareness is critical, as about 1 in 4 babies with a heart defect requires surgery within their first year. To help, ensure newborn screening, attend the 20-week scan, and share information to aid other parents in recognizing signs. Together, we can promote healthy hearts for all.
