Happy World Voice Day.

Did you know your vocal cords need care to stay in top shape?

Here are 5 simple ways to keep your voice healthy:
💧 Hydrate: Drink plenty of water (6–8 glasses a day) to keep your vocal cords lubricated.
🤫 Take Vocal Naps: If you talk all day for work, schedule short periods of silence to let your cords rest.
🚭 Don’t Smoke: To***co and ni****ne are leading causes of irritation and laryngeal cancer.
🔇 Avoid Shouting: Limit yelling or talking over loud background noise to prevent vocal strain.
🚫 Stop Throat Clearing: Instead of clearing your throat (which slams your vocal cords together), try a sip of water or a "hard swallow".
🚩 The 2-Week Rule:
If you’ve been hoarse or noticed a change in your voice for more than two weeks, it’s time to see an ENT specialist for an evaluation. Early detection is key to protecting your "instrument" for life!

🎗️ Is it just a mouth sore? Or something more?

This week is Oral, Head, and Neck Cancer Awareness Week, and I want to share a rule that could save your life: The Two-Week Rule. 🩺
If you have a mouth sore, a red or white patch, or a lump in your neck that hasn't healed or improved in 14 days, it’s time to see a specialist. Early detection is the difference between a simple procedure and a life-altering battle.
🚩 Warning Signs to Watch For:
🔺Persistent Ulcers: A sore on your lip or in your mouth that bleeds and won't heal.
🔺Discolouration: Red or white "velvety" patches on your tongue, gums, or cheeks.
🔺Lumps: Any unexplained thickening or a "hard" lump in your neck or jaw.
🔺Difficulty: Pain or a "stuck" feeling when swallowing, or a sudden change in your voice.
📈 The Facts:
It's not just to***co: While smoking and alcohol are major risks, HPV is a leading cause in younger, non-smoking adults.
✅Survival matters: When caught early, the survival rate is high—but it drops significantly if the condition is discovered in later stages.
✅Don't wait for pain. Oral cancer is often painless in its early stages. Take 2 minutes tonight to look in the mirror: check your tongue (sides and bottom), your gums, and the roof of your mouth.
✅If something feels off, book a screening. Your health is worth more than a "wait and see" approach.

When It's More Than "Just a Cold"—The Importance of TB Screening by ENT Surgeons

Did you know that Tuberculosis (TB) can lurk undetected in your ears, nose, or throat?

Red Flags We Monitor:

🔺The "Never-Ending" Ear Discharge: If you experience ear drainage that persists despite using standard drops and your hearing is diminishing, we start considering TB.
🔺The Change in Voice: A hoarse voice lasting more than three weeks warrants an examination. TB in the larynx can mimic other serious conditions.
🔺The "Silent" Neck Lump:A painless, firm swelling in your neck that remains after a course of antibiotics is a significant indicator for further investigation.
🔺The Stubborn Sore Throat: Ongoing pain or swelling in the tonsils that doesn't resemble a typical "strep" infection might indicate something more systemic.

🔺The Bottom Line:
Because ENT-related TB is "paucibacillary" (meaning it contains very few bacteria), it can be challenging to detect with a simple swab. Often, we require a small tissue sample (biopsy) or specialized scans to uncover the truth.

If you have persistent symptoms in your head or neck, don’t hesitate to seek help. Early diagnosis leads to a full recovery and protects our community.

“Mouth-Body Connection”
Did you know your mouth is the gateway to your entire ENT health? 🦷✨
As an ENT surgeon, I often see patients with chronic sinus issues or ear pain that actually stems from what’s happening in their mouth. Harmful bacteria from gum disease or untreated infections can travel to your sinuses and throat, leading to recurring infections.

Key ENT-Oral Connections:
☑️Sinusitis: Maxillary sinus issues are frequently linked to upper tooth infections.
☑️Bad Breath: It’s not always just “dirty teeth”—chronic tonsillitis or sinus drainage can be the hidden culprit.
☑️Ear Pain: Referred pain from the jaw or teeth can feel exactly like an earache.

Don’t ignore “just a toothache.” Your ENT health might depend on it! Check in with your dentist and ENT regularly.

Happy World Sleep Day! As an ENT surgeon, I frequently encounter patients who believe their loud snoring is merely an annoyance. However, it can actually indicate Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)—a "silent epidemic" impacting millions.

When your airway is obstructed due to a deviated septum, enlarged tonsils, or a collapsing palate, your body struggles to obtain oxygen throughout the night. This nightly "struggle" is not only exhausting; it is also associated with conditions such as hypertension, heart disease, and stroke.

Red Flags to Watch For:

1️⃣Persistent, loud snoring
2️⃣Gasping or choking episodes during sleep
3️⃣Waking up with a headache or dry mouth
4️⃣Excessive daytime sleepiness
5️⃣Sleep is a fundamental component of health, alongside nutrition and exercise. If you’re not breathing properly, you’re not sleeping well!

World Hearing Day is celebrated on March 3rd, 2026, with the theme "From communities to classrooms: hearing care for all children." Nearly 60% of childhood hearing loss is preventable, yet around 90 million children globally are affected, often undiagnosed. Unaddressed hearing loss can hinder speech development, academic performance, and social well-being.

Tips for Parents & Teachers:
✅Screen early by including hearing checks in school health plans.
✅Watch for signs like delayed speech or social withdrawal.
✅Address preventable issues like ear infections promptly to protect children's hearing.
Let's ensure no child is left behind due to hearing loss.

Healthy habits benefit not just the heart but also the ears, nose, and throat. As an ENT specialist, I've seen how daily choices affect breathing, hearing, and sleep.

Here are five expert-recommended habits for ENT health:

1️⃣Ditch cotton buds; ears are self-cleaning and inserting them can cause issues.
2️⃣Stay hydrated; water and warm herbal teas support throat and vocal cord health.
3️⃣Protect your hearing with earplugs in loud environments and keep headphone volume safe.
4️⃣Prioritize sleep hygiene to reduce inflammation and prevent nasal problems.
5️⃣Manage allergies early to avoid long-term sinus issues and infections.
6️⃣Listen to your body; persistent hoarseness, ringing, or ear pain should prompt a professional check-up.

Tinnitus: Understanding the Condition 👂🏾
Tinnitus refers to the perception of sounds, such as ringing or buzzing, without any external origin. This condition impacts millions of individuals, ranging from mild cases to more severe forms that can disrupt daily life.
While there is no one-size-fits-all "cure," various management techniques can greatly alleviate the effects of tinnitus.
Please encourage those around you to protect their hearing by recommending the use of earplugs especially in loud environments
