"Today is , and the 2026 theme is 'Diagnosis: First step to care'. 🩸
As a general & trauma surgeon, I know that for a patient with haemophilia, 'routine' surgery is never truly routine. Whether it’s an elective cholecystectomy or an emergency appendectomy, the scalpel is only one part of the story.

Success in the OR for these 'Hemo Heroes' requires:
Precision Prep: Collaboration with haematologists to ensure peak factor levels (often 80–100% for major surgery) are reached before the first incision.

✅Early diagnosis not only improves daily life but also saves lives when emergency surgery becomes necessary.

Head Injury is Never "Just a Bump."
As a trauma surgeon, I see the immediate, devastating consequences of head injuries in the Casualty.

On this World Head Injury Awareness Day, I want to remind everyone that the most effective treatment is prevention.
Many of the TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) cases are caused by:
🏍️ Motorcycle/bicycle accidents without a helmet.
🚗 Road accidents without seatbelts.
😩 Falls.
Your brain is irreplaceable. A simple, properly fitted helmet or seatbelt can change the trajectory of your life—and your family's life.
Please, take a second to be mindful. Wear the gear. It takes 5 seconds to buckle up or fasten a helmet; it can take a lifetime to recover from a brain injury.

Happy Birthday, Dr. Vambe! Wishing you a wonderful celebration and an amazing year to come.

This year's theme, "Kidney Health for All – Caring for People, Protecting the Planet,"resonates deeply in the OR. Did you know that a single hemodialysis session has a carbon footprint equivalent to driving nearly 240 kilometres? By focusing on prevention and early detection, we don't just save lives—we also reduce the environmental strain of resource-intensive treatments.
What your surgeon wants you to know:
1️⃣Don't wait for pain: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) often has no symptoms until it’s advanced.
2️⃣Control the "Big Two": Diabetes and high blood pressure are the leading causes of kidney failure.
3️⃣Prevention is the best "procedure": Simple blood and urine tests can catch issues before they ever require a surgeon's blade.
Let’s protect our "silent heroes" and our planet today.

As a surgeon, I view weight not just as a number but as stress on the body. Excess weight impacts internal systems and poses risks:

1️⃣Invisible Surgical Risk:
Complicates surgeries, affecting anesthesia, healing, and the visibility of organs.
2️⃣Mechanical Breakdown:
Extra weight leads to joint erosion and chronic pain, increasing risks of early osteoarthritis.
3️⃣Metabolic "Fire”:
Excess fat releases inflammatory chemicals, causing vascular damage, organ stress, and hormonal imbalances linked to cancer.
✅The Good News:
Losing 5–10% of body weight can significantly reduce surgical risks and inflammation. My aim is to help patients avoid surgery; we can explore medical or surgical options for obesity treatment. Would you like to discuss how weight loss impacts surgical outcomes or first steps if diet and exercise aren't sufficient?

Wound care from a specialist surgeon's perspective is guided by key principles: hygiene, protection, and vigilance, ensuring a smooth recovery.

Golden Rules of Wound Care:
1️⃣Keep it Covered: Use sterile dressings to protect wounds and promote healing.
2️⃣Clean Hands: Wash hands for 20 seconds before and after touching the wound.
3️⃣Use Mild Soap: Avoid harsh chemicals; use unscented soap and warm water.
4️⃣Gentle Cleaning: Pat the area dry instead of rubbing to avoid irritation.
Setting Up for Success:
☑Preparation: Organize a clean workspace and gather necessary supplies.
☑Removing Dressings: Moisten stuck dressings with saline or warm water.
☑Nutrition: Focus on protein and Vitamin C for healing.
☑Avoid Smoking: To***co increases infection risk by constricting blood vessels.
🚨When to Call the Surgeon:
Contact the surgical team if you notice excessive swelling, unusual discharge, fever, or if the wound edges appear to separate.
