Your Spine Starts at Your Feet 👣
This National Feet Week, we’re taking a moment to look down. As a spinal surgeon, I often tell my patients: your feet are the foundation of your entire musculoskeletal system.
When your foundation is off, your spine pays the price. Here is why your feet matter for your back health:
✅The Kinetic Chain: Misaligned feet (like flat feet or high arches) can cause your knees and hips to rotate inward. This tilts your pelvis and forces your lower back into an unnatural curve, leading to chronic pain.
❗Shock Absorption: Healthy arches act as natural shock absorbers. Without them, every step sends a jarring force straight up to your spinal discs.
❗The Nerve Connection: Sometimes, the pain you feel in your feet is actually a "distress signal" from your spine. Conditions like sciatica or herniated discs can cause tingling, numbness, or weakness in your feet.
How to support your spine from the ground up:
✅ Choose Supportive Shoes: Look for proper arch support and cushioning to keep your spine aligned.
✅ Early Intervention: Don't ignore "minor" foot aches; they can lead to compensatory movements that strain your back.
✅ Strengthen & Stretch: Simple foot exercises and calf stretches can improve your overall posture.
This week, give your feet the attention they deserve. If you’re experiencing persistent back pain alongside foot discomfort, it might be time to check your foundation! 👟✨

World Sleep Day - Sleep Well and Live Better: Creating the Right Environment for Your Spine

To ensure a good night's sleep and overall well-being, your spine needs to have the proper environment to decompress. Here’s why your sleep posture is crucial for spinal health:

✅Disc Rehydration: Throughout the day, gravity puts pressure on your spinal discs. ✅Quality sleep is the only time these discs can rehydrate and absorb nutrients necessary for flexibility.
✅Muscle Recovery: Deep sleep allows the muscles that support your spine to fully relax, alleviating the tension that can lead to morning stiffness and "text neck" discomfort.
✅Inflammation Control: Ongoing sleep deprivation is linked to increased systemic inflammation, which can exacerbate existing back pain.

Doctor’s Tips for a “Spine-Friendly” Night
✅Alignment is Everything: Aim for a “neutral spine.” If you sleep on your side, place a pillow between your knees to keep your hips aligned. If you prefer sleeping on your back, use a small pillow under your knees to support the natural curve of your lower back.
✅Avoid Stomach Sleeping: Sleeping on your stomach can twist your neck for hours, often resulting in pinched nerves or chronic neck strain.

☑The Mattress Test: If your mattress is over ten years old or you wake up with more pain than when you went to bed, it may be time for a new one. Look for one that offers medium-firm support.
☑Your spine supports you throughout the day; ensure you return the favor at night. If back or neck pain is disrupting your sleep, let’s work together to find a solution.

An ancient proverb states, “You’re as old as your spine.” 🧘‍♂️
In our digital age, it’s all too easy for poor posture and prolonged desk hours to negatively impact our well-being. However, small daily habits can significantly influence the strength and flexibility of your spine for the future. Whether it's a brief morning stretch or maintaining core engagement while seated, your future self will appreciate the care you invest today.

✅Quick Challenge:
Each time you check your phone today, take a moment to assess your posture! Are your shoulders aligned? Is your core engaged?

Your spine is the literal "backbone" of your health, but it’s often the most neglected. 🦴 Most of the issues we see in the clinic could have been prevented with small, consistent changes.
Here are 5 spine-friendly habits to start :
1️⃣Core Strength: A strong core acts like a natural brace for your spine. Try a 1-minute plank.
2️⃣Hydration: Your spinal discs are mostly water. Staying hydrated keeps them flexible and resilient.
3️⃣Lift with Legs: Never bend at the waist to lift; keep the load close and use your lower body.
4️⃣The 30-Minute Rule: Set a timer to stand up and stretch every 30 minutes to reduce disc pressure.
5️⃣Sleep Support: Use a supportive mattress that maintains your spine's natural curve.
Investing in your spine today means staying mobile for years to come.
