Statement from Salex Regarding Recent Concerns

We are aware of a post circulating online about a 2024 incident involving Salex Nasal Spray and a premature baby. We take all such concerns very seriously and have worked closely with the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) throughout their review of the matter.

SAHPRA has not instructed any recall or withdrawal of our product. Salex complies fully with international standards for non-sterile nasal saline, and we continue to provide documentation and testing results as required.

Salex is not intended for use in Neonatal ICUs or in immunocompromised patients, and this is now clearly stated on our packaging as an added precaution.

We care deeply about patient safety and sympathise with the trauma experienced by the family. However, it is essential that medical decisions and product use remain evidence-based and aligned with intended indications. Assigning blame to a non-sterile product used outside its intended scope—without exclusion of other infection vectors—is both scientifically and ethically problematic.

We are sharing this in the interest of transparency and to support safe use of healthcare products in all settings.
