April is Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Month. As oncologists, we often see patients who dismissed "minor" symptoms for months.
In the head and neck, early detection is truly the difference between a simple procedure and a life-altering battle.
Head and neck cancers can affect the mouth, throat, voice box, sinuses, and salivary glands. Because these areas are vital for breathing, eating, and speaking, catching changes early is critical for preserving your quality of life.
🚩 The "Two-Week Rule":
If you have any of these symptoms for more than two weeks, please see a specialist:
❗Persistent Sore Throat: A "stuck" feeling or pain that won't go away.
❗Voice Changes: New or ongoing hoarseness.
❗Unexplained Lumps: Any new swelling or mass in the neck or face.
❗Mouth Sores: Ulcers or red/white patches that do not heal.
❗Difficulty Swallowing: Pain or trouble moving food down.
🛡️ How to Lower Your Risk:
🚭Tobacco & Alcohol: These remain the leading causes; the risk increases significantly when used together.
💉HPV Vaccination: HPV is now a leading cause of throat cancer, especially in younger non-smokers. Talk to your doctor about the vaccine.
🦷See Your Dentist: Regular dental check-ups are often the first line of defense for spotting oral concerns early.
✅This month, I encourage you to perform a simple self-exam in the mirror and talk to your loved ones about these signs. Your health is worth more than a "wait and see" approach.
