Let’s address the often-ignored issue of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), affecting 1 in 10 people. As a gastroenterologist, I see how IBS limits lives, causing discomfort and missed opportunities.

What is IBS?
A gut-brain interaction disorder, not just psychological.
Symptoms include:
🔺Abdominal pain, often relieved by bowel movement.
Bloating.
🔺Changes in bowel habits (IBS-D, IBS-C, or IBS-M).
Top 3 Tips:
1️⃣Track Triggers: Not only food, but stress and hormonal changes matter.
2️⃣Watch for Red Flags: Blood, unexplained weight loss, or night symptoms require immediate medical attention.
3️⃣Avoid Self-Diagnosis: Other conditions may mimic IBS; proper diagnosis is essential.
✅You don’t have to live with IBS. Various treatments, including lifestyle changes and therapies, can help you regain control.

Did you know that tuberculosis (TB) isn't limited to the lungs? 🫁

While it’s commonly linked to persistent coughing, Gastrointestinal (GI) Tuberculosis presents a significant challenge within gastroenterology.

It can imitate other diseases such as Crohn’s disease, earning it the title of a "great masquerader" in the GI tract. This World TB Day, we aim to raise awareness that TB can also impact the intestines, liver, and even the peritoneum.

🔴Key signs to look out for:
🔻Persistent abdominal pain
🔻Unexplained weight loss
🔻Fever and night sweats
🔻Changes in bowel habits
🔻Early detection is crucial for saving lives.
Let’s join forces to eliminate both the stigma and the disease.

🦷👅Happy World Oral Health Day : The Gatekeeper of Your Gut

As a gastroenterologist, I consider the mouth to be much more than just a smile; it serves as the entryway to your entire digestive system. What occurs in your mouth doesn’t remain there; it sets the foundation for your gut health.

✅The Oral Microbiome
Your mouth is home to over 700 species of bacteria. When this ecosystem is balanced, it acts as a protective barrier. However, when it becomes unbalanced (dysbiosis), harmful bacteria can be swallowed, potentially disrupting the delicate equilibrium of your gut.

✅The Inflammation Link
Chronic gum disease, known as periodontitis, can instigate systemic inflammation, which has been associated with gastrointestinal issues like Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and even an increased risk of certain cancers.

✅ Digestion Starts Here
Digestion begins with the act of chewing. Healthy teeth and gums are essential for breaking down fiber-rich foods, which are vital for a flourishing gut microbiome.

🥗 GI-Friendly Tips for a Healthy Smile

☑Limit Added Sugars: Sugar nourishes the harmful bacteria responsible for cavities and gut inflammation.
☑Prioritize Probiotics: Incorporate fermented foods such as plain yogurt, kefir, and sauerkraut to nurture beneficial bacteria in both your mouth and gut.
☑Stay Hydrated: Drinking ample water promotes saliva production, which acts as your mouth’s natural defense against acid and bacteria.
☑Address Acid Reflux: Chronic reflux can damage tooth enamel. If you experience frequent heartburn, it may also be impacting your oral health.

Is your gut affecting your sleep, or vice versa? On , gastroenterologists emphasize the gut-sleep axis, highlighting how quality sleep supports digestive health.

Key points include:
**Nightly Repair**: Deep sleep repairs the intestinal lining and strengthens barriers against leaky gut.
**Microbiome Rhythms**: Disruptions in sleep can lead to bacterial imbalances, causing bloating and inflammation.
**Hormone Harmony**: Poor sleep alters hunger hormones, leading to cravings that stress the gut.

Common Issues:
Nocturnal reflux linked to GERD and sleep apnea.
IBS symptoms may worsen after a bad night’s sleep.

Doctor’s Tips for Better Sleep:
✅Follow the 3-hour rule (last meal before bed).
✅Maintain a consistent wake-up time.
✅Avoid caffeine and limit alcohol before sleep.
✅Seek help if digestive issues disrupt your rest or vice versa.

Gastroenterologist's Tips for a Healthier Gut - World Obesity Day

Managing weight isn't just about appearance; it's about protecting your internal organs. Small, sustainable changes can make a massive difference:

✅Prioritise Fiber: Aim for 5–6 servings of fruits and vegetables daily to support a healthy gut microbiome and regular digestion.
✅Mindful Eating: Slow down during meals. Eating too quickly can cause indigestion and prevent your brain from receiving "fullness" signals from your gut.
✅The 80/20 Rule: Focus on well-balanced, nutritious meals 80% of the time, allowing for moderation rather than total restriction.
✅Stay Active: Even low-impact exercise like brisk walking helps regulate gut motility and reduces systemic inflammation.
✅Screening Matters: If you have chronic reflux or a high BMI, talk to your doctor about preventive screenings like a colonoscopy or liver ultrasound.

This year's theme, "8 Billion Reasons to Act on Obesity," reminds us that this is a global systemic challenge that requires compassionate, evidence-based care.
Are you experiencing chronic heartburn or bloating that you'd like to discuss further?

A gastroscopy is a quick procedure (often 3–5 minutes) performed under sedation to ensure you are relaxed and comfortable.
Most patients remember very little of the experience and can go home the same day.
For your convenience procedures are done in our rooms.

Today, we’re celebrating
Healthy Lifestyle Awareness Day and National Caregivers Day. As a gastroenterologist, I know that when you are busy caring for others, your own "second brain"—the gut—is often the first to feel the stress.
A healthy lifestyle isn't just about the absence of illness; it’s about fueling your body to handle the demands of life.
Here are 3 gut-health essentials for every caregiver today:
Fiber is your Foundation. Aim for 25–30g of fiber daily from fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Fiber acts like a "broom" for your digestive tract, keeping things moving even when life feels stuck.
Hydrate to Regulate. Water is essential for breaking down food and absorbing nutrients. Dehydration is a leading cause of the sluggishness and bloating many caregivers face.
Manage the Gut-Brain Connection. Stress can physically alter your gut microbiome. Taking just 5 minutes for deep breathing or a quick walk can lower cortisol and prevent stress-related GI upset.
To the caregivers: Your health is the engine that allows you to care for others. Don't ignore persistent symptoms like bloating or changes in habits—listen to what your gut is telling you.
