Neurofeedback for Social Anxiety
Date posted: December 15, 2014

Neurofeedback for social anxietyA recent PsyBlog post is titled Why exercise and relaxation techniques benefit the socially anxious. The article talks about Queen’s College research that shows that people actually view their environment differently (as less threatening) after either exercise or a progressive muscle relaxation technique. Interesting.

Neurofeedback for social anxiety

In the 11 years since I became a NeurOptimal® neurofeedback trainer, I’ve seen the same thing over and over in my work with clients. Social anxiety, or just anxiety in general, is a common reason that people seek out neurofeedback. In the 11 years, only one client did not see a substantial reduction in anxiety.

Here are some examples specific to social anxiety (identifying details changed for confidentiality):

A 20-something graduate student made a two-hour each way commute to school because he couldn’t face the idea of living with roommates. After a course of neurofeedback training, he found a convenient apartment, recruited the roommates himself, and enjoyed living with them.
A woman who had always thought of herself as anti-social discovered that she liked people. She just hadn’t liked the anxiety she had previously felt whenever she was around them.
A college student who hadn’t been able to make friends found herself being the one in the (new) group of friends who was organizing the fun.
Neurofeedback for anxietyNice, don’t you think? I love being a trainer because I get to be part of this kind of change. If any of this resonates for you, please contact me at 084-250-2094 or visit my website at www.betterbrains.co.za

LEARNING DIFFICULTIES

Learning and language problems can have many causes. Although every case is unique, I have found that many children with leaning and language deficits have under active brain waves. The region concerned is ‘disconnected’ to other areas of the brain.
For example on the left side of the brain we have the speech centres Broca and Wernke’s area. Broca area is responsible for verbal expression and Wernike’s area is responsible for verbal understanding. If these two areas are not in communication then we will find understanding speech and speaking difficult. We may also find these areas functioning at a slow brain wave also causing them not to function effectively. With Neurofeedback we can train the both sites at the same time making the brain waves in those areas faster (Beta) and more "in sync" with each other allowing for the growth of new pathways between the two.

Biofeedback is the process of gaining greater awareness of many physiological functions primarily using instruments that provide information on the activity of those same systems, with a goal of being able to manipulate them at will. Some of the processes that can be controlled include brainwaves, muscle tone, skin conductance, heart rate and pain perception.

Biofeedback may be used to improve health, performance, and the physiological changes that often occur in conjunction with changes to thoughts, emotions, and behavior. Eventually, these changes may be maintained without the use of extra equipment, for no equipment is necessarily required to practice biofeedback.

Biofeedback has been found to be effective for the treatment of headaches, insomnia, anxiety and panic attacks.
