The Environmental Health unit held a malaria awareness session in the waiting area of Galeshewe Day Hospital, targeting patients and clients present at the facility. This session aimed to inform community members about malaria, particularly as the Easter holiday approaches, when many people travel for vacations, visit family, and attend church gatherings across the country.
Community members learned that malaria is endemic in three South African provinces: Limpopo, Mpumalanga, ande KwaZulu-Natal. The focus was on raising awareness about the risks of traveling to these malaria-endemic areas.
Key topics covered included:
- The cause of malaria, highlighting its transmission through the bite of an infected female Anopheles mosquito.
- Signs and symptoms of malaria, such as fever, chills, headache, sweating, body weakness, nausea, and vomiting.
- The importance of early testing and treatment for those who show symptoms after traveling to malaria-endemic regions.
- Preventative measures, including the use of mosquito repellents, sleeping under mosquito nets, wearing protective clothing, and seeking medical advice before traveling to high-risk areas.
Patients were urged to seek immediate medical attention if they experienced symptoms after visiting malaria-endemic regions.
The session was well-received, with patients actively engaging by asking questions and expressing interest in protecting themselves and their families from malaria infection.
