Accused sentenced for murder and robbery

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of North West, Major General Dintletse Molefe, welcomed the sentence handed down to Orapeleng Patrick Ratilodi (43) on Wednesday, 12 May 2021 by the Mafikeng High Court.

Ratilodi’s arrest emanated from an incident on Monday, 10 September 2018, when a bakery truck delivered bread at a shop in Mogopela district in Taung. The two employees (driver and his assistant) where busy preparing the order for the shop when two men, sitting on the veranda of the shop, suddenly pointed them with a fire arm and fatally wounded the one employee. The court heard that the accused searched the truck and robbed an undisclosed amount of money, furthermore they fled the scene in a red BMW.

After a thorough investigation and information received from witnesses, the suspects were arrested and the red BMW was seized. The second suspect was later acquitted in court, due to a lack of evidence against him, but Ratilodi was found guilty on charges of murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances.

The accused was sentenced as follows:

1. Murder : 20 years imprisonment
2. Robbery with aggravating circumstances : 10 years imprisonment
3. Pointing of a firearm : 5 year imprisonment

The court ordered that the five years imposed on count 2 should run concurrent with count 1, he was therefore effectively sentenced to 25 years imprisonment.

Hawks in Mpumalanga have re-arrested a 25-year-old woman who was wanted for alleged fraud after she failed to appear in court.

The Hawks said Palesa Maje, 25, along with her boyfriend, Bongani Sibuyi, had started an entrepreneurship program at the Bushbuckridge municipality, wherein they invited unemployed people to be part of the program and charged them R250 each.
More than 350 people were interviewed for the programme, said Hawks Mpumalanga spokesperson Captain Dineo Sekgotodi.
“Palesa Maje, 25, was remanded in custody by the Nelspruit Commercial Crime Court on Monday 03 May 2021.
“This follows her failure to appear before court on several occasions after she was released on bail for fraud on her initial arrest.
Sekgotodi said Maje and Sibuyi ran the entrepreneurship program in 2017.
“It is alleged that around 2017 Maje and her boyfriend Bongani Sibuyi decided to start an entrepreneurship program at Bushbuckridge municipality.
“They invited unemployed youth to be part of the program. The interested youth applied and they were interviewed and more than 350 qualifying learners were told to pay administration fee of R250 each to the bank account of the unregistered company belonging to the two accused. “The learners were promised that they will receive R3000 monthly stipend.
“After payments the program never materialized, the two accused disappeared and left learners stranded,” said Sekgotodi.
The Hawks said the suspects disappeared without a trace and the matter was eventually reported to the Hawks.
“An investigation ensued which led to the arrest of the two accused and were later released on bail.
“Maje absconded from court and a warrant of arrest was issued twice against her until her recent arrest. She will join her co-accused back in Court on the 07 May 2021,” said Sekgotodi.

revive old cases against persons of interest in the murder plot of Colonel Bruwer

PRETORIA – The unravelling investigation into the murder of Lieutenant Colonel Leroy Bruwer (49), has resulted in the revival of old cases against three persons who appeared in the Nelspruit Regional Court on Tuesday, 06 April 2021.

Elliot Sindane (69), Elvis Mlimi (50), Mabuthi Khoza (35) were initially part of five suspects arrested over a decade ago after they were implicated on charges of illegal hunting, illegal possession of fi****ms, illegal rhino horns dealings and trespassing at the Kaapmuiden Dalton farm.

When the accused were profiled it turned out that they had outstanding cases against them that were never finalized. These cases were previously investigated by Skukuza detectives. The two outstanding cases that were registered in August and September of 2011 respectively were consequently struck off the court roll in 2012 under dubious circumstances.

The relentless investigators saw the need to zoom into the three suspects in the ongoing investigation into the murder of Lieutenant Colonel Bruwer who was shot and killed whilst on his way to work along the R36 road between Nelspruit and Sabie on the 17 March 2020. The investigations into the old cases were finalised last year and presented to the National Prosecuting Authority for a decision which resulted in the trio being served with court summons to appear in court.

All three are out on a warning and their case has been postponed to Monday, 17 May 2021, for legal representatives. Meanwhile, the previously lone arrested suspect in Lieutenant Colonel Bruwer murder’s case Sinovuyo Salela (28) remains in custody and is expected to appear in the Mbombela High Court for trial on 26 July 2021.
