NORTHERN CAPE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH IS GEARED FOR THIS YEAR’S INFLUENZA SEASON.
The Northern Cape Department of Health urges members of the public to remain vigilant and disregard malicious social media content intended to incite unnecessary panic and confusion, particularly as we enter the influenza season. Should a surge in flu cases occur in the province, the department remains ready to manage the situation to ensure timely care and containment.
As artificial intelligence technologies advance at pace, they present unprecedented opportunities for improved public services, and an enhanced quality of life. We therefore urge the public to use these tools responsibly and to refrain from generating malicious social media content designed to cause unnecessary panic such as the recent fabrication of a poster alleging a hantavirus case at Sol-Plaatje University in Kimberley.
The Provincial Health Department, through its Risk Communication and Community Engagement Consultative Forum, is mandated to support national efforts to prevent, detect, and respond to public health threats and emerging emergencies. Among its priorities is ensuring that, during outbreaks or suspected cases, cases are identified, screened and isolated early, close contacts are monitored, and standard infection prevention measures are implemented to contain further transmission.
As we enter the influenza season and given that hantavirus symptoms often present initially like influenza, but can deteriorate rapidly, the Department reiterates the National Department of Health’s call for anyone with recent contact with a confirmed case, to seek urgent medical attention.
As part of our influenza campaign, the Northern Cape Department of Health urges eligible health users (pregnant women, the elderly, HIV positive persons and people that are on chronic medication) across the province to receive flu vaccinations at their nearest health facility before the winter season escalates.
Vaccine stock is available, and there is no cause for alarm. The department remains at your service.
