Good day Northern Cape Oncology Center family, We are still on the topic of Colore**al cancer, also known as bowel, colon, or re**al cancer. This type of cancer starts in the colon or re**um, which are parts of the large intestine. This cancer often begins as small growths called polyps that form on the inner lining of the colon or re**um. Over time, some polyps can become cancerous if not removed during screening procedures like a colonoscopy.
Key Facts About Colore**al Cancer:
Symptoms: Common signs include blood in the stool, changes in bowel habits, unexplained weight loss, abdominal pain, and fatigue.
Risk Factors: These include age (risk increases after 45), family history of colore**al cancer, diets high in red or processed meats, obesity, smoking, heavy alcohol consumption, and conditions like Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis.
Prevention and Screening: Regular screening is crucial as it can detect polyps early before they turn into cancer. Screening is recommended starting at age 45 for most people7. A healthy diet, regular exercise, and avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol can also reduce risk.
Treatment: Treatment options depend on the stage of the cancer and may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted therapy, or immunotherapy.
Early detection saves lives. If you're 45 or older or have risk factors for colore**al cancer, talk to your doctor about screening options.
