Physiotherapy isn’t just for muscles and joints — specialised physiotherapists can help retrain your brain after a stroke or concussion by guiding the nervous system to form new pathways, improving movement, balance, and coordination.

Don't let BACK PAIN spoil your plans this December!

This pain can have several causes including a muscle strain, sitting or sleeping in a poor position for an extended period, whiplash and osteoarthritis. It can also be caused by or worsened by stress and anxiety. Occasionally a disc protrusion can irritate the adjacent nerve, causing a ‘pinched or trapped nerve’ or cervical radiculopathy.

In physical therapy, range of motion (ROM) is the measurement of how far a joint can move in different directions, like bending or straightening. It assesses a joint's flexibility and is a key indicator of a patient's mobility and functionality, which can be limited by injury, surgery, or conditions like arthritis. Therapists evaluate ROM through active movement (patient-driven) or passive movement (therapist-assisted) to determine the best treatment plan.
How it works
Measurement: ROM is measured in degrees and indicates the total movement a joint is capable of.
Active vs. Passive:
Active ROM (AROM): The patient moves the joint on their own.
Passive ROM (PROM): The therapist or another person moves the joint for the patient.
Assessment: Physical therapists perform ROM tests to establish a baseline and determine if a joint's movement is within the normal range.
Treatment: ROM exercises are used to improve or maintain mobility, which helps with recovery and prevents stiffness or contractures.
Why it's important
Function: ROM is crucial for performing daily activities, from walking and bending to getting up from a chair.
Injury prevention: Maintaining proper ROM can help prevent injuries by ensuring muscles, tendons, and joints are working optimally.
Recovery: It is a key component of rehabilitation after surgery or injury, as it helps patients regain movement more quickly and effectively.

🧠 Stroke 101: What You Need to Know

A stroke is a type of brain injury. Symptoms vary depending on the area affected, but survivors often experience weakness on one side, or difficulties with movement, speech, or thinking.

Types of stroke:

Ischemic stroke: Most common. A blood clot or narrowed vessel reduces blood flow to the brain, causing cells to die from lack of oxygen.

Hemorrhagic stroke: A blood vessel bursts and leaks into the brain, causing damage.

Who’s at risk?
Strokes are more common in people 65+, but they can happen at any age.

TIA = Warning sign
A Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) looks like a stroke but lasts a few hours or up to a day and doesn’t cause permanent damage. It’s a serious warning—seek treatment to prevent a future stroke.

There is hope
Many stroke survivors experience natural healing and improve further with targeted rehabilitation.

If you or a loved one has had a stroke—or a possible TIA—our team at Martin Viljoen Physiotherapists can help with a personalised rehabilitation plan to regain movement, speech coordination, and independence.
