Our children’s educational counseling is ideal for any child who wishes to develop their learning abilities. The process focuses on the psychological processes behind each child’s learning abilities. In order to assess in which area of their education a child needs assistance, we conduct a short test using the Theory of Multiple Intelligences. This allows us to determine the medium through which the child’s brain absorbs and stores information most efficiently. This could be visual, auditory, kinesthetic etc. One would be shocked if you were to realize how many drop outs and student’s who have been labeled as “stupid” are actually highly intelligent. The problem that children face in the modern day is that the traditional, lecture-style classroom that you’ll find in the majority of public schools only caters for 2 of the 7 styles of learning. In other words, a kinesthetic student, who learns by being actively involved in the learning process will be able to recite a list of Shakespearean poems that they acted out during drama class, but they’ll fail a history class in which they are forced to sit and listen instead of actively participating. Our Educational Coaching sessions are also centered around a concept called “Active Learning.” Active learning is ideal for kinesthetic learners, but almost all types of learners benefit from this principle. Research in the field of Educational Psychology has proven that the human brain absorbs and stores more information when a child is actively involved in receiving information as opposed to passively listening. Some effective Active Learning techniques include group discussions and games. The third technique that we use in our Children’s Educational Coaching sessions is something we like to call “Learning by Teaching.” I am sure that we can all agree that you can’t teach something that you know nothing about. However, we decided to use “reverse psychology” on this statement. In other words, we believe that one of the most effective ways to teach a child is to ask them to teach someone else. For example: Envision that two children are studying for an English test on Nouns and Verbs. In order to ensure that your child not only learns the difference between these parts of speech, but that they understand it well enough for the answer to become second nature-like saying the alphabet. Our favorite way to achieve this is through incorporating art and entertainment to the learning experience. We will place a book with information on Nouns and Verbs next to the child before instructing them to design a Powerpoint presentation (or draw on paint) to explain the difference between Nouns and Verbs to another student. Incentive systems are often used here to motivate the child in successfully teaching the information. ( For example: I’m going to test Johnny after you have taught him and if he passes you get a 10 minute longer recess.) By designing the lesson material, the student is activating the Active Learning process. While doing this, they are not only forced to take in the information, but they are subconsciously forcing themselves to present the information in a way that is simple enough for their friend to understand, thus making it simple enough for them to understand.
Believe it or not, these basic techniques can be applied to assist students with low grades, mental retardation, autism, and ADHD. The results may take time. However, at X-pect Effect, we regard patience and encouragement as essential values when working with your child.
