Boils under the axilla (armpit) are often caused by bacterial infections, particularly Staphylococcus aureus. The bacteria enter the skin through small cuts, hair follicles, or blocked sweat glands, leading to inflammation and pus formation.

Several factors can increase the likelihood of developing boils in the armpit area:

Poor hygiene: Not cleaning the area well enough can allow bacteria to thrive.
Excessive sweating: Moisture in the armpit can provide a breeding ground for bacteria.
Shaving: Small cuts or irritation from shaving can allow bacteria to enter.
Ingrown hairs: Hair growing back into the skin can cause infection and boil formation.
Compromised immune system: People with weakened immune systems, such as those with diabetes (including Type 1 diabetes), are more prone to infections.
Tight clothing: Wearing clothes that rub against the skin can cause irritation and make it easier for bacteria to enter.
Hidradenitis suppurativa: A chronic condition characterized by the formation of painful boils and abscesses in the armpit, groin, and other areas with sweat glands.
If the boils are recurrent or particularly painful, a healthcare provider may need to evaluate for an underlying condition or recommend treatment options such as antibiotics or drainage.
