"It took about one minute and 40 seconds for Darcy to take his first breath, followed by a gurgled cry, when he was born on February 28 last year.

“We think that being attached to the placenta, which continues to provide oxygen and blood to the baby, contributes to the stability of the baby in the first couple of minutes.”

Evidence of the benefits of delayed clamping has been growing in recent years. Last year researchers at the University of Sydney found that waiting just 60 seconds before cutting the cord could drastically improve a premature baby's chances of surviving, saving an extraordinary 100 lives for every 1000 pre-term babies born.

The World Health Organisation also recommends that cord clamping is delayed until at least a minute after birth, saying it can improve iron status in infants for up to six months.

It is hoped the new research will give doctors a clearer guide on when it might be best to cut the cord, based not on a set time, but how each baby is faring.

Lead researcher Dr Doug Blank said it could dramatically change how babies are delivered globally and reduce infant deaths in poorer countries.

“This technique, if it works, can be used in virtually any setting,” Dr Blank said."
