*Before you medicate for concentration...*

Gethin and I spent a night in hospital these holidays to see if there was anything negatively affecting his concentration and focus.

It could be something like siezures or a simple vitamin D or iron deficiency. We also looked for possible food sensitivity and checked his hearing.

Dehydration and f***l loading can also affect concentration. Gethin is a terrible drinker so we really struggle with this 🫣 anyone else struggle here?

Before medicating your child for a behavioral or concentration related concern...do look for underlying causes!

Best part of the whole admission....we got to build the coolest lego set ever!! Kept us going from morning to night!

VITAMIN D...a few more pointers!!
nadia.khan I loved your reel on Vitamin D! It amazes me how often we see Vitamin D deficieny. Too often right?

I also recommend supplementing ALL breastfed babies with Vitamin D. Like you said...breastmilk is not a good source of vitamin D (although it seems that bit of vitamin D is very well absorbed). A litre of formula will achieve this level of vitamin D.

400IU daily is spot on for a minimum level of supplementation. Sometimes it will be stated at ug or micrograms...we are looking for 10ug.

And DID YOU KNOW tanning your mushrooms...literally sticking them in direct sun for 15 minutes...will increase their vitamin D content 8 fold!! You can meet or almost meet your Vit D requirements that way but if my kids are anything to go on...mushrooms are another not so reliable daily food source in kids!!

IT DOESNT MATTER HOW HUNGRY THEY ARE...THEY WONT EAT THAT!!

Good nutrition is important as poor diet can affect mood, learning and sleep. But taking in a good varied diet is easier said than done for a child with ASD!!

Limited diets are sooooo common in ASD for various reasons including
- sensory issues
-constipation (this seems to be a common issue in ASD)
- iron deficiency
- undiagnosed food allergies (they seem to be more prone to food hypersensitivity!).
Its like all odds are against you mama!! But know you aren't alone and yes the diet can probably be worse. I think the least variety ive seen in my career is cream crackers and lemonade! That's it!!

Autism unsurprisingly then has been linked to low levels of certain nutrients (vitamins B3, B6, C, calcium, iron and zinc). The microbiome of the child with ASD also seems to look a little different!

So proper supplementation is key alongside a food desensitization program! Remember your team is there for you and you are never alone!!

WORLD PREMATURITY DAY! IM CELEBRATING TOO!

Today is world preemie day! Its a day I celebrate all the beautiful special prems that I have had the honor of treating and my own little boy who was born a bit early...at 32 weeks.

I was prepared for my baby! I had everything I thought we needed and his room in our CARDIFF, UK home was beautifully decorated. We then flew out to SA for a friends wedding. I was 32 weeks pregnant!!

2 days into our holiday my husband attended the bulls party and I had a quiet evening at home with my parents and sister. Mum made a delicious cottage pie. I remember it being a bit spicy🤷‍♀️

Suddenly I was plagued with cramps and diarrhoea. My dad reassured me that it was just a tummy bug...he had had the exact same thing a few days earlier. Or maybe it was mums spicy cottage pie. Dad poured me some coke and told me to rest.

Well these tummy pains were like nothing id ever experienced!! Holy moly!! Eventually mum took me to the ER and turns out I was fully dilated and in labour. Not quite what you had dad🤣.

We phoned Hogan who ran out of the bulls party with his best friend so fast that Chris broke his shoe. They made it just in time, an hour later our son was born!

We named him Gethin, a good Welsh name!!

My friends, church and family were amazing and managed to organize everything we needed for this baby.

3 months later we flew home!! Only to return a few months later to live!

💙💙💙

NICU is a hard but incredible experience and I will always empathize with these parents.

Nutrition from Tiny to Teen and Beyond

“I constantly go between wanting you to be my baby forever and excited about all the amazing things you’ll do in this life” said every parent ever, including me!

Hi! I’m Megan, registered dietitian with a special interest in paediatrics and mum of two.

I qualified as a dietitian at the University of KwaZulu Natal. After an adventurous community service year where I was nearly attacked by a black mamba I moved to the UK. There are no snakes there!

I worked across the country from top to bottom gaining valuable experience in the clinical, community and food service components of dietetics. I have had the pleasure of tending to various nutritional needs in adults, paeds and neonates but I fell in love with paediatric dietetics and that’s where I chose to work. For the past 8 years I have had the privilege of working in the some of the country’s biggest childrens hospitals gaining further experience in paediatric nephrology, cardiology, type 1 diabetes, enteral feeding and allergy.
