Monthly Saturday Morning classes. I offer Iyengar Yoga to suit a wide range of needs in Knysna. Some at the top of the list are:
It increases strength and flexibility, corrects imbalances in the body, reduces pain, maintains healthy joints, improves blood circulation without putting strain on the heart. It can bring relief for insomnia, digestive issues and headaches. Yoga quietens the mind and calms the nervous system - an effective anti-stress solution. Why Iyengar Yoga? Here's an exerpt from Mr Iyengar's 'Light on Life':

No matter what style of yoga you practice or where—whether it’s Ashtanga at the Yoga Workshop in Boulder, Colorado; Yee Yoga at Yoga Shanti in Sag Harbor, New York; or Anusara at Yoga Sangha in San Francisco—your yoga has been influenced by B.K.S. Iyengar. The huge popularity of yoga in the West can in large part be attributed to Mr. Iyengar, who first introduced his style of yoga to the United States several decades ago. Many of his innovations are standard features today: He molded the way we think about alignment and developed anatomically precise terms to convey it; pioneered the use of props as learning tools; and taught how to minimize esoteric Hindu trappings without sacrificing the yoga quest for union of body, mind, and soul. One of his most significant contributions, however, has been the use of yoga as a therapeutic tool. His discoveries have provided evidence of yoga’s power to deal with a host of maladies, and the results of his work have raised the credibility of yoga in the scientific and medical communities. Venue
Classes take place in my easily accessible studio in the centre of town. The studio is fully equipped with mats and other Iyengar style equipment, that assist in achieving alignment, balance and precision. Yoga in your home
If you prefer to remain in your own home, or it is difficult for you to get out and about, I am happy to come to you. Private classes
This is ideal if you would like a more personal, focused yoga session or are recovering from illness or injury. Perhaps you seek yoga for restorative and rehabilitative reasons (preferably with the go-ahead from your medical practitioner). I am happy to work in conjunction with your physiotherapist to enhance and support the therapy they already provide you with. Yoga for children
Children do the best yoga, start from when they are babies and do it quite naturally. Then life interferes, they balance, hang, climb, crawl and invert less. Towards adolescence they often sit more and spend more time in front of screens. Starting yoga at a young age can lay down the imprints of good habits and healthy body awareness and help to integrate mind and body activity. Speak to me if you would like me to start a yoga class for the children at the school you're connected to. Family yoga (1 hour)
Max 4 family members (from 8yrs upwards). Doing yoga together as a family provides an opportunity for a fun filled hour of moving, stretching, balancing and strengthening together. It is a precious hour where no one thinks of techno-play/screen time, making supper or the stresses of work. Truly a time of movement and play together, resulting in everyone continuing with their day grounded yet lighter and more relaxed. Yoga and religion

“Health is generally understood as freedom from illness, but it is more than freedom from illness. Health is a perfect state of equilibrium and concord in the functions of joints, tissues, muscles, cells, nerves, glands, respiration, circulation, digestion, assimilation and elimination, and also a perfectly balanced disposition of mind.
Life is a combination of conscience, consciousness, intelligence, mind, senses of perception and organs of action. Health involves a tremendous communication with each and every part of man so that each cell communes with the other. This cannot be purchased in a market place. Health has to be earned with inspiration, sweat, and toil. Yoga does that.”

Iyengar Yoga

You must purge yourself before finding faults in others.
When you see a mistake in somebody else, try to find if you are making the same mistake.
This is the way to take judgment and to turn it into improvement.
Do not look at others' bodies with envy or with superiority.
All people are born with different constitutions.
Never compare with others.
Each one's capacities are a function of his or her internal strength.
Know your capacities and continually improve upon them.

The hardness of a diamond is part of its usefulness, but its true value is in the light that shines through it.

B.K.S. Iyengar, Light on Life

“Yoga teaches us to cure what need not be endured and endure what cannot be cured” ― B.K.S Iyengar

Thank you to those who joined today's Saturday morning yoga class. Cool summer weather, Piet My Vrou singing in the background. A privilege. Acutely aware of having the choice of peace during these times. Forgot to take photos of our asanas! Below - Hatti and Ziggy chilled from our post savasana energy and replenishing our avo tart.

As always deep gratitude and acknowledge ment to BKS Iyengar and my senior teachers.

Next morning class 2 December 8.00- 10.30. Book early to avoid disappointment. (Thanks Brigitte for the photo!)

, Thursday's from 8am-9:30am.

With regular practice the entire body is reconditioned and nourished. This happens by stimulating the endocrine system – especially the pituitary and pineal glands in the head. The pituitary gland controls the function of several other endocrine glands and is thus sometimes called the master gland. It influences growth, blood pressure, the thyroid gland and metabolism. The main function of the pineal gland is to control the circadian rhythm by releasing melatonin.

Being inverse forces the blood to the head which promotes mental clarity. Iyengar says: “The asana is a tonic for people whose brains tire quickly.” (B.K.S. Iyengar: Light on Yoga, page151). The lungs benefit, too. They become more resistant against changes in temperature which helps to prevent colds, coughs and ailments of the chest such as bronchitis and asthma.

Tired body? Stress filled mind?

Take time for yourself and try a session of Restorative Iyengar Yoga. This kind of yoga helps us to connect with our parasympathetic nervous system, helping us to slow down and stop our stress response (fight or flight).

All levels welcome.

What a privilege it was to host and contribute to this valuable workshop in our studio. A full morning of dipping in to some aspects of healing ourselves, breath as a component there of and a basic introduction to chest opening asanas and pranayama.

Thank you Terri Rankin-Pietersen and Louis for the richness of your teaching and insights. Thank you to the participants who attended (inspite of the cold) with openness, curiosity and joy.

Watch this space for more of Terri's gems to come!
