"Many of us place top priority not on becoming Christ like in the middle of our problems but on finding happiness. i want to be happy but the paradoxical truth is I will never be happy if I am concerned primarily with becoming happy. My overriding goal must be in every circumstance to respond biblically, to put the Lord first, to seek to behave as He would want me to. The wonderful truth is that as we devote all our energies to the task of becoming what Christ wants us to be, He fills us with joy unspeakable and a peace far surpassing what the world offers." Larry Crabb "Effective Christian Counselling" from WinlowInstitute Book List

"Looking forward to the next course June 4-16. I am always learning something new from each course - different people with different questions - and the blessed Holy Spirit making each course unique! Equipping us all to be more competent and confident in the use of the material." Winston

"Counselling is not a discipline like dentistry or medicine which depends fundamentally upon a growing amount of technical knowledge administered by a highly trained professional. Rather, counselling is centrally and critically a relationship between people who care." - from Effective Biblical Conselling by Larry Crabb (WI booklist)

"When psychologists don't grapple with the sinful roots of emotional disorder and when theologians separate scholarship from relevance, people are left to live in confusion - wondering if the questions that keep them awake at night really have answers. Finding no real help either in a psychology that fails to direct them towards Christ, or in sermons that showcase the preacher's knowledge more than pe*****te folks with God's truth, troubled people are tempted to settle for solutions that substitute excitement for supernatural reality and immediate relief for lasting movement. As a consequence, scores of people today are caught up in a superficial and distorted version of what it means to trust the Lord." .....from 'Understanding People" by Larry Crabb

"God is a real person, not a psychological state I induce in myself. He is there, so to speak, and is always able to interact with us. Turning one's awareness to God is therefore living in reality." from John White "Changing on the inside" (Winlow Institute's recommended reading)

"As values, standards and lifestyles around us change, we become lulled into a false sense that things are normal and acceptable. Because we are constantly exposed to these influences we are in danger of adapting our own lifestyle, attitudes and standards to those around us. This is why we need to be exhorted from the Word of God to prevent Satan gaining a foothold." Selwyn Hughes

Of all earthly music, that which reaches farthest into heaven, is the beating of a truly loving heart - Henry Wardbeecher

"Hurting can have a variety of causes. What can seem trivial to one person can be a mountainous difficulty to another." Selwyn Hughes

Jesus who is the Christian's example spent many hours talking to needy people in groups and in face to face contact. The Apostle Paul, who was very sensitive to the needs of hurting individuals, wrote that we who are strong, must bear the weakness and help carry the burdens of those who are weaker. Probably Paul was writing about those who had doubts, fears and sinful lifestyles, but his compassionate concerns extended to almost every problem that might be encountered by counsellors today. The biblical writers do not present helping people as an option - but as a responsibility for every believer.

"However blameless our character, however orthodox our doctrine, however efficient our service – all these things are but ashes upon a rusty altar if we do not know how to demonstrate true care for one another." - Selwyn Hughes
