🩷 Noticing a Breast Lump? Here Are Important Things to Look Out For

Finding a breast lump can be scary, but not all lumps are cancer. Here are some key signs that mean you should get it checked:

šŸ” What to check for in the lump:
• Hard or fixed in place
• Irregular shape
• Doesn’t go away after your menstrual cycle
• Growing over time

🚩 Other symptoms to watch:
• Skin changes like dimpling or redness
• New ni**le inversion or bloody discharge
• Swelling in the breast or armpit
• Persistent, localized pain

Most breast lumps are benign (like cysts or fibroadenomas), but early evaluation is always the safest choice. ā¤ļø

If you find a new lump or something doesn’t feel right, book a clinical breast exam and imaging (ultrasound or mammogram) as soon as possible.

Your health is worth it. Early detection saves lives. šŸ’—

The Breast Imaging Society of South Africa says around 20% of breast cancer cases in the country occur in women under the age of 40.

It warns that late diagnosis reduces survival, especially in younger women with aggressive forms of the disease.

The society's chairperson, Dr Peter Schoub, says they recommend self-examination from the age of 20, and annual screenings from the age of 40.

ā€œThere is a general trend worldwide that we're seeing more breast cancers in younger women. No one knows the exact reasons why in South Africa. Some of the possibilities are that we generally have a younger population and therefore a larger proportion of the breast cancers diagnosed will be in younger women,ā€ says Dr Schoub.

Schoub stresses that breast cancer can affect anyone, and anything unusual should be checked immediately.

ā€œThere’s a theory that black women tend to get breast cancer at a younger age, and we see that really in countries across the world, including the USA and in Europe,ā€ he adds.
