Smoking Makes Your Skin Look Older and Gives You “Smoker’s Face”
If your primary concern is anti aging skin care, you shouldn’t smoke—if you do, you’re working against your goal of youthful skin! “Smoker’s face” is an actual term in the medical dictionary, coined in 1985 by Dr. Douglas Model. Dr. Model conducted a study published in The British Medical Journal in which he discovered that he could identify people who had been long-term smokers (defined as ten years of smoking or more) by their facial features. The facial features of long-term smokers often made them look significantly older than they actually were. People with “smoker’s face” have one or more of the following characteristics:
Lines or wrinkles on the face that typically radiate at right angles from the upper and lower lips or corners of the eyes; deep lines on the cheeks; or numerous shallow lines on the cheeks and lower jaw.
A subtle gauntness of the facial features with prominence of the underlying bony contours. When fully developed, this change gives the face an atherosclerotic look (i.e., a look similar to that of a choked up blood vessel). In its lesser version, the gauntness results in a slight sinking of the cheeks. In some cases, the result is a leathery, worn or rugged appearance.
An atrophic, slightly pigmented gray appearance of the skin.
A plethoric, slightly orange, purple and red complexion that is different from the purple-blue color of cyanosis or the bloated appearance associated with the impact of alcoholism.
Ci******es Are Full of Toxins That Impact Your Skin
When you smoke, the toxins from ci******es build up in your skin very quickly. And no matter how many home facials and face masks you use to draw toxins out of your skin, you won’t be able to undo the damage of smoking fast enough. Cigarette smoke contains over 4,000 toxins, many of which are inhaled directly. These toxins enter your bloodstream, directly affecting the molecular structure of your skin. And no matter what you do to counteract these toxins, there isn’t a product available that can detoxify your skin faster than a cigarette will load it up with toxins.
