🤰🏻Lower back pain which mums experience after pregnancy are usually as a result of pre-existing pre-natal backache or due to mechanical changes in the spine and surrounding muscles which have occurred during pregnancy which have now led to abnormal changes and hence the pain.

🤰🏻Due to structural changes as a result of pregnancy, mums may experience pain in the lower back and hip/buttocks during prolonged periods of sitting, standing and/or walking. Pain may also run down the leg from the lower back and may be accompanied by numbness or a tingling sensation - This is known as Sciatica.

🤰🏻Chiropractic can help immensely with post-partum lower back pain.

🤰🏻See a Chiropractor to have it checked out. The longer the delay in getting the correct treatment, the more stubborn and persistent the problem!

💡Did You Know: The path your pain travels can indicate which lumbar nerve is irritated, a condition known as lumbar radiculopathy or sciatica, with different nerves affecting different areas.
For example, pain radiating down the back of the thigh and into the calf and heel is often associated with an L5 or S1 nerve root, while an L4 nerve root might cause pain that moves more into the front of the thigh and shin.

🔎How nerve location relates to pain:

▪️ L4 Nerve Root: Irritation here can cause pain, numbness, or weakness that travels down the front of the thigh and shin. You may experience weakness when trying to lift your foot (dorsiflexion).

▪️ L5 Nerve Root: This often causes pain that travels from the lower back and buttocks down to the outer thigh, the front or side of the lower leg, and the top of the foot. Weakness in the ability to lift your foot (dorsiflexion) is common.

▪️ S1 Nerve Root: This is a common cause of pain that radiates down the back of the thigh, into the calf, and to the heel and outer side of the foot. Weakness is present when rising onto your tiptoes, and the Achilles reflex may be lost.

⚠️ Seek specialised care if you experience severe leg weakness, loss of sensation in the leg, or sudden bladder or bowel incontinence, as these can be signs of a more severe condition.

This is an excellent info graphic, which effectively summarises the effects that a big belly or having excessive stomach fat has on the spine and lower back pain.

🫃🏻 Most of the time, a bulging belly is an indicator of having poor core body strength rather than extra body fat!

🫃🏻If the core of the body is weak, it may lead to visible signs such as exaggerated arching of the lower back seen as a "deep ditch of the lower back curve" and abnormal forward tilting of the pelvis seen as "sticking out of the buttocks".

🫃🏻 In turn, this can cause severe pain in the lower back and buttock region, which may also run down into the thighs and knees.

🫃🏻A big belly can predispose one to develop many spinal disorders such 'pinched nerves' and disc herniations which lead to sciatica, sprains and strains, lumbar facet syndrome and more.
