A morning really well spent joining the first Psoriasis Association South Africa support group meeting for Gauteng as an honorary medical member.

One of the things I mentioned was how studies show that Psoriasis causes as much disability as other major medical diseases. In fact in one study psoriasis performed worse in terms of physical functioning than conditions like diabetes, stroke or lung diseases , it was only surpassed by congestive cardiac failure. So we really don’t appreciate the effect it has on people. There are also many associated comorbidities and so this really is an important disease. As a dermatologist with a special interest in inflammatory diseases I feel honoured to serve psoriasis patients who face these daily struggles.

If you have psoriasis take note of this wonderful association Psoriasis Association South Africa . There is so much value in peer support, which can help facilitate a sense of acceptance, empowerment and feeling less alone in your experience.

Thank you to and for coming on board and spoiling our psoriasis warriors with lovely products to help their skin.

Actinic keratoses are rough, scaly patches of skin due to sun damage. They are predominantly found on sun-exposed parts of the body, particularly the forearms, backs of the hands, face, ears, bald scalp and lower legs.

Actinic keratoses are normally caused by cumulative sun exposure over the years. The condition is more common in older people.

Left untreated, there is a very small risk that an actinic keratosis can progress into a form of skin cancer called squamous cell carcinoma. That's why it's important to visit a dermatologist to know if you have any of these precancerous growths on your skin.

Dr Jacobs will do a comprehensive skin examination to determine the number and location of actinic keratoses as the treatment depends on how many you have.

Treatment of actinic keratoses may include several types of prescription creams for use at home or cryotherapy, which involves freezing the actinic keratoses in order to remove them, is another common treatment for actinic keratoses.

Research shows that visible skin conditions such as acne, rosacea and psoriasis can contribute to making those affected feel unattractive, embarrassed, or self-conscious. Studies also show that certain skin conditions such as acne, atopic dermatitis and psoriasis can trigger depression and anxiety.

There are, however, many effective treatment options that can help you gain control of your skin condition as dermatologists are trained in managing all medical dermatological disorders and can provide early and effective treatment that improves both the physical and psychological effects.

Yes, it’s necessary to sweat. Sweating cools the body, which prevents us from overheating. Hyperhidrosis, however, is a disorder that results in excessive sweating. Hyperhidrosis affects the water-producing (“eccrine”) sweat glands in the body. It can be localised or affect the whole body.

Excessive sweating can be embarrassing and can interfere with work and personal relationships. Some people find hand sweating produces problems with writing on paper.

WHAT IS THE TREATMENT OF HYPERHIDROSIS?
Treatment depends on the type of hyperhidrosis and where the excessive sweating is localised. Dr Jacobs also considers your overall health and other factors. Treatments include topical prescription-strength antiperspirants, physical treatments and sometimes prescription medications that are taken orally.
