Is screen time becoming the new babysitter?

Screens are everywhere — but what happens when they quietly replace play, real‑world interaction and family time?

In this powerful episode, Prof Pieter Kruger (Director: the NWU Centre for Health and Human Performance) and Miss Hanlie Degenaar (Head of CHHP Care2Kids) unpack how screen exposure shapes a child’s brain development, behaviour, communication and social skills. They also break down what healthy limits look like for families in a digital world.

Watch this if you want to understand:
• why screen time feels so convenient
• how it affects emotional and cognitive development
• what happens to sleep, behaviour and language skills
• whether “educational” apps really help
• how much screen time is actually healthy
• what parents can do to protect development in a tech‑heavy world

We get it...

Tablets are easy.
Tablets are "mess free."
Tablets keep your child occupied.

And Tablet companies (and apps) make lots of money selling the idea of "optimal learning" and "education."

But the reality is, tablets significantly interfere with and actually hurt holistic development and learning. Tablets offer an isolating, passive, and sedentary experience, which completely contradicts how children authentically learn (e.g. connection, exploration among materials + senses, and movement).

Tablets prevent children from learning how to navigate independently, self-occupy, and self-regulate. Tablets reduce attention span, as well as critical and creative thinking skills. Tablets reduce communication and connection. Tablets keep children quiet and sedentary, where they should be asking "why?!" and outside trying to climb trees.

THESE skills and experiences are what builds stronger brains, bodies, and hearts, which significantly contributes to how children will not only feel about themselves, but how they will navigate the world, indefinitely!

New research following children for more than a decade links high screen exposure before age two to accelerated brain maturation, slower decision-making, and increased anxiety by adolescence.
