In My Rose Garden They are on the way to recovery but the road ahead is uncertain and scary. "Hope is the heartbeat of healing."

In My Rose Garden by Dr Barbara Louw is an uplifting blog to encourage and inspire people who have gone through serious medical procedures, such as amputation, mastectomy or lumpectomy, & life-changing diagnoses, such as cancer or stroke. In My Rose Garden is an uplifting blog to encourage and inspire people who have gone through serious medical procedures, such as amputation, mastectomy or lumpec

tomy, and life-changing diagnoses, such as cancer or strokes. Dr Barbara Louw uses the beautiful metaphor of the rose garden as a space of beauty, growth and shared experiences. Roses are symbols of beauty and resilience, as they bloom amidst thorns. We can thrive in this space despite life's challenges and trauma when we find beauty and a reliable place to. This is a safe space for sharing challenging and painful experiences. Like a well-tended rose garden, this is a welcoming, nurturing environment where you will find support and hope. Here we can grow and be transformed like roses and embrace the personal growth that occurs in the face of adversity. We share resilience and triumph while highlighting how challenges can ultimately lead to growth and strength. In this garden, there is the gorgeous aroma of hope and optimism, like the fragrance of roses. She shares stories and insights that inspire hope and resilience, infusing this blog with the uplifting scent of possibility and renewal. Just like everyone's journey is unique and valuable, the diversity and variety found in a rose garden reflect our diverse experiences and perspectives. Just as a rose garden requires regular care and attention, the importance of self-care and wellness practices in maintaining resilience and well-being is part of cultivating wellness through this blog. She offers tips and resources for nurturing physical, emotional, social and spiritual health. Together we will celebrate the different seasons of life and navigate the periods of change, just like the seasons in a rose garden. We will welcome the fullness of life and it’s ebbs and flows, offering guidance for navigating the inevitable changes with grace and resilience. "In My Rose Garden" blog acknowledges the challenges of life and celebrates the beauty, growth, and resilience that can be found amidst them. Since this is a very sensitive field and you might be in a vulnerable space, Dr Barbara Louw will offer her counselling services.

Being understood can be more healing than being fixed.

Being understood can be more healing than being fixed.

Not every wound needs quick advice.
Not every struggle needs immediate fixing.
Sometimes the greatest gift we can offer another person is the quiet assurance that they are safe to be heard.
When people are rushed towards solutions before they have processed their pain, they can walk away feeling invisible rather than supported. True understanding takes patience. It allows space for reflection, honesty, and emotional safety.
In that space, people often discover their own strength, insight, and next steps.
Healing is not always found in quick answers. Very often, it begins in moments of compassionate listening and human connection.

When I began writing about medical trauma, there were a few essential themes I knew had to be addressed for those navigating adverse diagnoses and the long road that follows. Today, I want to pause and offer a sincere word of gratitude to the co-survivors. You recognise that survival has taken place, yet you also understand that the journey is far from over.

A medical crisis reshapes far more than physical health. It alters one’s relationship with the body, and gently, sometimes painfully, redefines relationships with others. To every co-survivor who continues to stand present, patient, and faithful—thank you. Your presence carries a quiet strength that supports the path towards wholeness.

If this message resonates with your journey, you are warmly invited to join our In My Rose Garden - Healing Together Facebook group—a space of understanding, encouragement, and shared healing. Here, you will find a community that honours both the seen and unseen parts of recovery, and walks together towards wholistic wellness.

If you have journeyed with my writing for a while, you will know that my relationship with growth, healing, and empowerment is not simplistic. I speak about life as it is truly experienced – complex, often nonlinear, and filled with moments where clarity does not come easily and theory alone is not enough.

This is also how I counsel. I walk alongside individuals and fellow counsellors who are seeking more than surface-level solutions – those who long for a reflective, grounded space where they can thoughtfully engage with the issues that linger, recognise the patterns shaping their lives, and gently work through the areas that do not yield to quick or convenient answers.

My approach is collaborative, flexible, and deeply committed to wholistic growth and lasting wholeness. Sessions are available online or in Pretoria.

If you are someone who feels that quiet nudge – the awareness that you are ready for deeper, meaningful work rather than quick fixes – then I invite you to reach out. Your next step towards clarity and wholeness may begin with a single, courageous conversation.

Dr Barbara Louw - The Story Beneath
There is always a moment, often unseen by others, where everything changes.
A diagnosis, a procedure, a slow unravelling of what once felt certain. And then, quietly, a new story begins — not the one you would have chosen, but one you are now living with courage you never asked for.
