Last night was one of those evenings that reminds you why this work matters.

I had the honour of speaking at the Autism Awareness Gala Dinner hosted by the F.O.N.D Foundation in collaboration with the North West Provincial Disability Forum, and I left with a full heart.

To the F.O.N.D team and everyone behind this beautiful evening: thank you. Thank you for creating a space where neurodiversity is celebrated, centred, and championed. The work you are doing to ensure that children living with autism are seen, heard, and included is exactly the kind of advocacy our communities need more of.

To every parent, healthcare provider, educator, and advocate who was in that room last night: your presence is powerful. Keep showing up.

The conversation doesn't end in April. It’s all year round 💙♾️

As April comes to a close, I've been sitting with something.
We spend a month talking about autism, but the children I see every day don't live inside a month. They live in school mornings that feel too loud, in friendships that take more effort, in moments of pure, brilliant joy that look different from what we expect.
Neurodiversity isn't a buzzword. It's a reminder that the human brain was never meant to come in one shape.

To every parent navigating this with your child: you are not alone, and neither is your little one.

To every neurodivergent person reading this: you are not too much. You never were.
Awareness is just the beginning. Understanding, acceptance, and genuine inclusion. That's where the real work lives. And it doesn't stop in April. 💙

👂✨World Hearing Day! ✨👂

Today we celebrate and advocate for every child's right to hear, learn, and thrive! 🌍💙
This year's theme, "From communities to classrooms: hearing care for all children", is one that hits close to home as a paediatrician. Every day I see firsthand how much a child's ability to hear shapes their confidence, their development, and their future. 🏫❤️

Here's what we need to remember:
🔇 Up to 60% of childhood hearing loss is preventable. Simple interventions like vaccinations, safe birthing practices, and avoiding loud noise exposure can make all the difference.
🔍 Early identification saves futures. The sooner hearing loss is detected, the sooner a child can get the support they need to keep up in school and life.
🏫 Inclusive classrooms matter. Better acoustics, hearing assistive technology, and aware educators create spaces where every child can succeed, regardless of hearing ability.

As parents, caregivers, educators, and healthcare workers, we all have a role to play. If you're ever concerned about your child's hearing, please don't wait. Book your appointment with me today!
Let's build communities and classrooms where no child is left behind. 💪🏽

Happy Healthy Lifestyle Awareness Month! I'm here with 5 simple, non-negotiable tips to help our children build a foundation for a strong and vibrant future 👇

1. Get moving for at least 60 minutes each day.
It doesn't have to be a structured sport; it can be dancing in the living room, playing tag in the garden, or riding a bike. The goal is to get their heart rate up, build strong bones, and have fun while doing it!

2. Eat nutritious food.
We call this "eating the rainbow." By filling their plates with a variety of colourful fruits and vegetables, we ensure they get a wide range of essential vitamins and minerals that fuel their growing bodies and boost their immune systems.

3. Drink water daily.
Water is the best choice for hydration. It helps maintain energy levels, improves concentration at school, and regulates body temperature—especially important in our South African climate. Keep a water bottle handy to encourage sipping throughout the day.

4. Power up with sleep by aiming for 8–10 hours.
Sleep is when the body repairs and the brain processes everything they've learned. A consistent, relaxed bedtime routine is key to helping them wake up feeling refreshed, focused, and ready to take on the world.

5. De-stress by doing something you love.
Mental health is just as important as physical health. Whether it's reading a book, drawing, building with blocks, or simply spending quiet time outdoors, encourage your child to take a mindful moment each day to recharge.

Small daily choices lead to big, lifelong results. 💙

Which of these 5 tips does your family need to focus on this week? Tell us in the comments!

Today we stand with the 1 in 100 South African children living with epilepsy. 💜

Did you know?
✨ 75% of epilepsy begins before age 20 — with nearly half of cases starting before a child's first birthday
✨ The good news: up to 80% of children can have their seizures controlled with proper treatment

As parents, early recognition matters:
Watch for unusual staring spells, repetitive movements, or brief losses of awareness, especially in infants and toddlers. These aren't always the dramatic seizures we imagine.

Remember: Many children with epilepsy also face developmental or learning challenges, so comprehensive care and support make all the difference.
If you're concerned about your child, don't wait. Early diagnosis and treatment can transform outcomes.

Let's break the stigma, spread awareness, and ensure every child gets the care they deserve.

Happy World Read Aloud Day! 📚✨

Reading aloud isn't just about words on a page. It's about connection, imagination, and building worlds together. Whether your child learns differently, needs extra support, or races through chapters, the magic happens when you share stories side by side.

Today, pick up any book. Use silly voices. Point at pictures. Pause to wonder together. Let your child turn the pages at their own pace. These moments matter more than perfect pronunciation or finishing the story.

South African families, let's celebrate our incredible diversity of languages and stories! Read in English, isiZulu, Afrikaans, Sesotho, or switch between them all. Every word you share plants seeds for a lifelong love of reading.

What will you read aloud today?

World AIDS Day 2025 ❤️
Today, we remember those we've lost, celebrate the incredible progress in HIV treatment and prevention, and recommit ourselves to a future free of AIDS.

Remember, every child deserves:
✨ Access to testing and early diagnosis
✨ Life-saving antiretroviral therapy
✨ A stigma-free environment
✨ The chance to thrive, not just survive

To the families navigating this journey: you are not alone.
To my fellow healthcare workers: thank you for your tireless dedication.
To our communities: let's continue breaking down barriers and building understanding.

Together, we can create a world where no child is born with HIV, and every child living with HIV has access to the care they need.
Let's end AIDS. For every child. 🌍
❤️🎗️
