TINEA PEDIS

athletes foot ( tinea pedis) is a fungal infection of the foot. It presents with a rash that usually starts in between the toes and spreads throughout the foot if not treated when it initially occurs.

The signs and symptoms include redness, dry and scaly skin that may be itchy, stinging with a burning sensation. Tinea pedis is contagious and may spread via contaminated floors, socks, shoes and clothing.

Damp socks and shoes, warm, humid conditions favor the progression of athletes foot. It can spread to your hands and nails when you scratch or pick at affected areas.

PREVENTION

*KEEP YOUR FEET DRY, especially between your toes -dry between your toes after a shower or bath.

*CHANGE SOCKS REGULARLY-if your feet get very sweaty, change your socks twice a day.

*WEAR LIGHT, WELL-VENTILATED SHOES-avoid shoes made of synthetic material such as vinyl or rubber as they promote a warm, humid environment for the infecting organism

*ALTERNATE PAIRS OF SHOES-do not wear the same pair of shoes(if possible) so as to allow them time to dry after each use.

*PROTECT YOUR FEET IN PUBLIC SPACES-wear sandals in public pools, showers and locker rooms.

*DO NOT SHARE SHOES-sharing increases the risk of spreading athletes foot.

Plantar Fasciitis is one of the common causes of plantar heel pain. When the thick band( plantar fascia) that runs across the foot is subjected to abnormal tension and stress, the results are micro tears and inflammation of the band at the plantar heel area.

Plantar fasciitis commonly causes stabbing pain usually during the first steps in the morning. As you get up and move around the pain decreases, however, it might return after long periods of standing or after standing up after sitting for a long time.

Plantar fasciitis is more common in runners, people who are overweight and those who wear shoes without adequate support and stability.

RISK FACTORS

AGE-most common in people between the ages 40-60

CERTAIN TYPES OF EXERCISES- activities that place a lot of stress on your heel and attached tissues

BIOMECHANICS-flat feet, a high arch or abnormal patterns of walking can affect the way weight is distributed when you are standing and can put added stress on the plantar fascia

OBESITY- excess weight puts extra stress on the plantar fascia

TYPE OF OCCUPATION-factory workers , teachers and others who spend most of their work hours standing or walking around, especially on hard surfaces

NB: Ignoring Plantar Fasciitis may result in chronic heel pain which may hinder your day to day activities .

If you’ve experienced similar symptoms as highlighted above make sure you contact or visit your nearest Podiatrist for a full examination, treatment and management 🦶🏽🩺👨🏾‍⚕️👩🏾‍⚕️
