Friends Day Centre Friends Day Centre is a Special Care Centre for learners with severe to profound disabilities

From as young as 2 years of age, our learners come from different communities and have various and / or multiple disabilities including, Cerebral Palsy and Spina Bifida to mention but a few.

Friends Day Centre welcomes applications for children and adults with severe to profound intellectual and physical disabilities.

📍 Located on the grounds of Alexandra Hospital, Annex Road, Maitland, Cape Town, South Africa.

Our Application Process:

Step 1: Initial Interview and Assessment
The parent or guardian and applicant attend together. This helps us understand the learner’s diagnosis, medical history, daily routine, and support needs.
Please note: An interview does not guarantee placement.

Step 2: Trial Period
Successful applicants will be invited to attend a short trial period to ensure the Centre is the right fit.

Fees:
• Once-off registration fee: R500
• Monthly Centre Fees:
Under 18 years: R1,725 per month
Over 18 years: R1,925 per month

Transport (Optional):
Transport routes are currently full, but a waiting list is available.
One way: R1,000 per month
Two way: R1,400 per month

This morning, we had the pleasure of welcoming Sejal Purbhoo, CEO/Managing Director of Olympic Paints, along with Andrew Franks, Founder of TAG Collective and CMO of Olympic Paints, to Friends Day Centre.

Their visit gave us the opportunity to show firsthand the incredible transformation made possible through Olympic Paints’ generous donation. The vibrant colours now filling our walls have brought new life, warmth, and joy into our learning spaces.

Without their immense contribution, we would not have been able to paint and brighten both the walls and the lives of the vulnerable learners we serve.

A heartfelt thank you to Olympic Paints for their generosity and belief in our Centre.

We would also like to extend a very special thank you to Vicky Alvarez Campos and Cailey Low, whose support and efforts made this meaningful connection and valuable partnership possible.

Our Story

Friends Day Centre (FDC) is a Non-Profit Organisation which began humbly in 1959 as a care and learning facility for children with special needs. From these humble beginnings, FDC has grown consistently over the years and now caters for as many as 120 learners with severe and profound physical and / or mental disabilities in the age group ranging between and 47 years.

The learning and therapy capabilities of FDC have evolved over time and are supported by a physiotherapy room, a sensory garden, a whirlpool bath and a sensory room.

The Centre has a staff compliment of 40 dedicated therapists, carers and assistants utilising 10 classrooms to provide appropriate education, personal skills development and various therapies to meet the specific needs of our learners.
