Let’s Take a Look at Mammograms! 🔎

What is a Mammogram?🤔

A mammogram is a specialized imaging study that uses low-dose X-rays to create a 2D image of the breast. It can detect abnormalities that may not be felt during a clinical breast examination, making it an essential tool for early detection of breast cancer.💪

Who Should Get a Mammogram?💁

Screening recommendations depend on an individual’s risk of developing breast cancer:

Average risk: Women at low risk are advised to begin mammograms from the age of 40.

High risk: Women with the BRCA gene mutation or a first-degree relative with breast cancer should start earlier. In these cases, screening often includes both mammograms and breast MRI every 6 months, beginning as early as 25–30 years old.

Are Mammograms Painful?🧐

Most women describe a mammogram as only mildly uncomfortable. The pressure applied to the breast during imaging is necessary to obtain clear pictures but is usually brief and well tolerated. 🙌

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month!
This year, the WHO theme is: “Every Story is Unique, Every Journey Matters.”

At Health at Hart Medical Practice, we stand alongside women, men, and families throughout this month and beyond. We encourage everyone to come forward and get screened early. Every journey matters to us — whether you have medical aid or not, whether you are young or old, we are here to support and assist you.

This year, we pay tribute to those who have lost the fight, those who are still fighting, and the Survivors who live to tell their story.

✨ Every Journey Matters! ✨

Today, we highlight Dr. Hedwig Hartogh’s journey with breast cancer. Diagnosed in October 2024, Dr. Hartogh continues her fight but proudly considers herself a Breast Cancer Survivor. With the support of her community, family, staff, friends, and oncology team, she has been able to face this disease with courage and is living each day to the fullest.

💬 Advice from Dr. Hartogh:
“Listen to your body. If you feel uncertain about a change in your breasts, speak to a healthcare provider. Breast cancer is affecting young women daily. Be aware. Don’t delay. Get screened today!”
