Laminitis..

⚠️Winter Laminitis Risk⚠️

There is nothing better than a bright and cold winters morning but be aware of the risk of laminitis during December and January.

🧊☀️Cold and sunny days lead to higher levels of sugars in grass. ☀️🧊

Ideal conditions for high non-structural carbohydrates concentrations are clear skies to maximise photosynthesis, and low night temperatures, below 5°C, which slows growth and minimise loss of carbohydrates.

❄️Frosty weather top tips: ❄️
✨Avoid grazing during bright, cold spells until overnight temps stay above 5°C returns
✨Provide plenty of alternative forage by feeding hay but consider soaking to reduce further sugars
✨Keep hydrated and ensure your horse is drinking
✨Reduce starch in the diet
✨Feed a balanced diet of essential vitamins and minerals

🔹Speedi-Beet mash, that once soaked is high in volume, fibre and chew time but low in starch and sugar🔹

Speedi-Beet can also be soaked with warm water to provide a tasty winter warming meal.

If you suspect your horse has laminitis, call your vet immediately for advice.

✨Forage replacement ✨

Forage may be in short supply but there are plenty of alternative solutions!

Reasons to look for forage alternatives
🌱Lack of grazing
🌱Limited or poor hay and haylage
🌱Dentally challenged
🌱Calories, either increasing or decreasing depending on your horses requirements.

A lack of forage could result in
💙Weight loss
💙Digestive problems such as gastric ulcers and colic
💙Behavioural issues
💙Loose droppings

To maintain a healthy digestive system and weight, your horse should be consuming around 2% of their bodyweight in forage per day or if your horse is good doer this can be decreased to a minimum of 1.5%

Enhance and extend forage with:

💙Speedi-Beet 💙
For those good doers and those that need to control their calorie intake

💚Fibre-Beet 💚
For those that need additional calories and weight gain.

Feed 1kg of dry weight Speedi-Beet or Fibre-Beet to replace up to 1.5kg of hay.

Remember to always soak into a tasty mash and split across as many feeds as possible!

💙Seasonal Laminitis watch!💙
Laminitis, a condition in which blood circulation to and in the hoof decreases and the sensitive laminae of the feet become inflamed and swell causing painful increased pressure in the hoof.

Common Causes:
🔹Rich grass/ fructan overload
🔹Obesity
🔹High cereal intake
🔹Metabolic disorders such has EMS or Cushing’s
🔹Illnesses or infections

Laminitis can be very painful and can come on very suddenly.

Early Warning Signs:
🔹Shifting weight or reluctance to move
🔹Rocked-back stance
🔹Warm hooves or increased digital pulse
🔹Lameness

Prevention Tips:
🔹Monitor grass intake by either strip grazing, use of a grazing muzzle or reducing turnout at times of day when fructan levels are at their highest.
🔹Maintain a healthy weight
🔹Remove starch and sugars from the diet – avoid cereal based feeds
🔹Feed a balanced diet of essential vitamins and minerals
🔹Be cautious during seasonal changes!

Dietary changes and restrictions to grazing however should not compromise your horse and ponies fibre intake

Feeding a tasty Speedi-Beet mash, that is high in volume, fibre and chew time but keeping calories minimal is ideal for good doers and those prone to laminitis when fed as a balanced diet.

Speedi- Beet is also approved by the Laminitis trust

If you suspect your horse has laminitis, call you vet immediately for advice.

💚🐴Pre-exercise meal of Fibre-Beet 🐴💚

A major contribution to gastric ulcers is exercising on an empty stomach. Movement can force stomach acid beyond the protective layer of the stomach, where it can burn the squamous region.

Feed Fibre-Beet prior to exercise to-
🟢Create a physical barrier or “raft” of fibre to help prevent acid splash
🟢Increase chew time and saliva production to help neutralise the stomach acid around the optimum of pH4
🟢Provide natural beet pectin’s, that can bind and extend the mucosal lining to protect the stomach from acid splash
🟢A natural prebiotic to support gut health when fed as part of a balanced diet

💚✨Winter forage worries! ✨💚

🐴 Is your roughage supply limited?

🐴Fibre is one of the essential nutrients needed when it comes to the horse’s diet and roughage is the highest proportion.

🐴To maintain a healthy digestive system and weight, your horse should be consuming around 2% of their bodyweight in forage per day.

A lack of roughage could result in
💚Loss of weight
💚Digestive problems such as gastric ulcers and colic
💚Behavioural issues

Fibre-Beet, a super fibre conditioning mash with a carefully formulated combination Speedi-Beet, lucern and oat fibre is the ideal tasty forage replacement
💚Low starch
💚Low sugar
💚Increases chew time & fibre intake
💚Highly palatable tasty mash

🐴Fibre-Beet can be fed separate from hard fed as a “haynet in a bucket”. By offering more than one fibre source alongside hay this will encourage natural foraging and grazing behaviours.
