Laminitis..
⚠️Winter Laminitis Risk⚠️
There is nothing better than a bright and cold winters morning but be aware of the risk of laminitis during December and January.
🧊☀️Cold and sunny days lead to higher levels of sugars in grass. ☀️🧊
Ideal conditions for high non-structural carbohydrates concentrations are clear skies to maximise photosynthesis, and low night temperatures, below 5°C, which slows growth and minimise loss of carbohydrates.
❄️Frosty weather top tips: ❄️
✨Avoid grazing during bright, cold spells until overnight temps stay above 5°C returns
✨Provide plenty of alternative forage by feeding hay but consider soaking to reduce further sugars
✨Keep hydrated and ensure your horse is drinking
✨Reduce starch in the diet
✨Feed a balanced diet of essential vitamins and minerals
🔹Speedi-Beet mash, that once soaked is high in volume, fibre and chew time but low in starch and sugar🔹
Speedi-Beet can also be soaked with warm water to provide a tasty winter warming meal.
If you suspect your horse has laminitis, call your vet immediately for advice.
