She qualified as a dermatologist in 2013, after obtaining a dermatology fellowship from the College of Medicine in South Africa. A firm believer in giving back to the community, Dr Ngobeni is a regular guest on Ligwalagwala FM and Munghana Lonene FM, where she discusses broad dermatology issues and answers listeners’ questions. She also generates awareness around Albinism, skin cancer and anti-bleaching creams. Xanthelasma:

Xanthelasma is a skin condition where yellowish, soft cholesterol deposits form under the skin, usually around the eyelids

Flat or slightly raised yellow patches
• Most commonly on the inner corners
of the upper eyelids
• commonly painless
• Often appears on both eyes

What Causes It?

Xanthelasma is often linked to:
• High cholesterol
• High LDL (“bad”) cholesterol
• High triglycerides
• Sometimes diabetes or thyroid

Acne vulgaris is a chronic skin condition primarily caused by four factors:
•Excessive oil (sebum) production,
•Clogged pores by dead skin cells and think oils
• Over colonisation by bacteria
• Inflammation

Factors that can trigger and make condition worse
•Hormonal Fluctuations:
•Genetic factors
•Environmental factors
•Some Medication
•Diet
•Stress
• Skin care products and Hair products

Approximately 80-90% of young people will be affected to some degree.

‼️ Studies have linked Severe acne vulgaris to a range of mental outcomes. Such as depression,anxiety,suicide and low self esteem.

This is a stage in their life where they are more concerned with their body image . Having Acne can have a negative impact on how they view themself .

In South Africa. Organization such as CANSA are driving the Sun Smart skin cancer awareness campaign in South Africa. Which is from the 1 December-31 January but the message continues the whole year.

As Dermatologists we patner with these organisations to continue to educate our patients & the community at large.

The aim of such campaign is to promote Sun safe behavior,Educate about the effects of chronic sun exposure and educate people about the dangers of to much sun on the skin.

‼️Did you know that atleast 80% of Sun damage occurs In childhood. Hence it’s important to teach them while young.

‼️Damage that is caused by Sun Burn when young predisposes one to skin cancer later in life.
‼️ South Africa has one of the world's highest skin cancer rates.
‼️Damage is Cumulative,Sunburn causes permanent, irreversible DNA damage in skin cells.

You might say “ ooh i have dark skin so I don’t have to worry about sun induced cancer but for Darker skin tone Hyperpigmentation is one big problem and the sun can trigger and worsen the condition .
So these Tips apply to everyone:

* Seek Shade:
•Avoid direct sunlight between 10 a.m. to 3 p.m..
* Sunscreen Usage:
•Apply SPF 30- 50+ sunscreen 20 minutes before going outside and reapply every 2hours, or after swimming, sweating, or toweling.
* Protective Gear:
•Wear wide-brimmed hats
•Sunglasses(UV400),
•UV-protective clothing & swimsuits
* Avoid Artificial Tanning
• Steer clear of sunbeds and sunlamps, which increase cancer risk.
* Check Skin Regularly:
• Perform monthly self-examinations to identify new or changing moles (ABCDE rule: Asymmetry, Border, Colour, Diameter, Evolving).
Why It Matters:
* High Risk: South Africa has one of the world's highest skin cancer rates.
* Damage is Cumulative: Sunburn causes permanent, irreversible DNA damage in skin cells.
