In South Africa. Organization such as CANSA are driving the Sun Smart skin cancer awareness campaign in South Africa. Which is from the 1 December-31 January but the message continues the whole year.
As Dermatologists we patner with these organisations to continue to educate our patients & the community at large.
The aim of such campaign is to promote Sun safe behavior,Educate about the effects of chronic sun exposure and educate people about the dangers of to much sun on the skin.
‼️Did you know that atleast 80% of Sun damage occurs In childhood. Hence it’s important to teach them while young.
‼️Damage that is caused by Sun Burn when young predisposes one to skin cancer later in life.
‼️ South Africa has one of the world's highest skin cancer rates.
‼️Damage is Cumulative,Sunburn causes permanent, irreversible DNA damage in skin cells.
You might say “ ooh i have dark skin so I don’t have to worry about sun induced cancer but for Darker skin tone Hyperpigmentation is one big problem and the sun can trigger and worsen the condition .
So these Tips apply to everyone:
* Seek Shade:
•Avoid direct sunlight between 10 a.m. to 3 p.m..
* Sunscreen Usage:
•Apply SPF 30- 50+ sunscreen 20 minutes before going outside and reapply every 2hours, or after swimming, sweating, or toweling.
* Protective Gear:
•Wear wide-brimmed hats
•Sunglasses(UV400),
•UV-protective clothing & swimsuits
* Avoid Artificial Tanning
• Steer clear of sunbeds and sunlamps, which increase cancer risk.
* Check Skin Regularly:
• Perform monthly self-examinations to identify new or changing moles (ABCDE rule: Asymmetry, Border, Colour, Diameter, Evolving).

•Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer, and cases are rising, with significantly
