To realize and improve access to primary healthcare services and life expectancy for the people, the Mpumalanga Department of Health will continue to conduct campaigns and programmes that encourages regular health screenings.

In the Nkangala District, healthcare workers have been diagnosing, treating, and referring community members through the Cheka Impilo and Door-to-Door Campaigns since 08 October 2025.

These campaigns are also testimony to the department's efforts and commitment to increasing access to healthcare services, which will significantly improve life expectancy by providing crucial preventative care, early diagnosis, and treatment for diseases, further reducing mortality rates from preventable and treatable conditions.

The Mpumalanga Department of Health teams in Nkangala District have gone all out since Tuesday, 1 October 2025, conducting the Cheka Impilo (Know Your Health Status and Door-to-Door) Campaign to bring healthcare services to the doorsteps of our communities and encourage everyone to do regular medical check-ups to know their health status.

The campaign commenced on Tuesday in Delpark in Victor Khanye Local Municipality. Yesterday, on 9 October 2025, the campaigns were conducted at OR Tambo Park, Mhluzi township in Steve Tshwete Local Municipality. STATEMENT ON MEC SASEKANI MANZINI'S VISIT TO THE EHLANZENI HEALTH DISTRICT

On Thursday, 9 October 2025, Mpumalanga Health MEC, Sasekani Manzini, visited the Ehlanzeni Health District Offices, specifically focusing on the Emergency Medical Services contact centre division.

The MEC's unannounced visit was a direct response to the general public's concerns raised in line with the services rendered by the call-centre unit.

As the department that consistently listens and accordingly responds to the grievances raised by community members, the MEC graced the Ehlanzeni District premises and interacted with the management and staff members, who gave a detailed account of how they execute their responsibilities in a daily basis.

Among other things that the personnel raised was that there were children who randomly call the emergency line just to prank the staff, which massively hinders and disrupts service delivery, given that time gets wasted on answering phone calls that are not genuine.

The Mpumalanga Department of Health therefore requests parents, guardians, schools, community members and other stakeholders to play their part in cautioning children against this unpatriotic behaviour.

Upon further engagement with the MEC, both the management and staff vowed to maximise their efforts to ensure that the centre renders the best possible service so that community members' emergency calls are attended to at a lighting speed.

The department will continue to monitor the progress at the centre, in line with the commitments made to the MEC by the officials at the facility, thus living up to its mandate of serving the people of Mpumalanga with distinction.

The Mpumalanga Department of Health is participating in a 5-day Leprosy case management workshop at The Capital in Mbombela from 6-10 October 2025.

To capacitate systems and fight leprosy,
the National Department of Health in conjunction with the World Health Organisation and Leprosy mission of South Africa conducted Leprosy Case Management workshop for a total of seventy (70) participants in Mbombela with the aim of training healthcare professionals, conduct community education programs and public awareness campaigns,to be able to early detect cases, and ensuring access to medication, that help to treat and stops transmission and prevents disabilities.

The targeted audience included the following categories:

• Primary healthcare doctors
• Primary healthcare nurses
• District or provincial pharmacists
• Primary healthcare program managers(CDC& IPC)
• Occupational health therapists
• Health promotion practitioners
• Dermatologists.

Leprosy remains a health challenge in South Africa, where cases are often missed or mismanaged due to competing priorities (TB/HIV Programmes)and rural healthcare inequities. With increased population mobility, urbanisation, and weak integration of leprosy services into general dermatological and communicable disease programmes, the risk of transmission and late detection is heightened.

Additionally, South Africa’s public health infrastructure must be prepared to meet the global targets of the WHO Global Leprosy Strategy 2021–2030, which emphasises zero leprosy-related disability and stigma.

Thus, there is a pressing need to strengthen frontline capacity through targeted training initiatives for HCWs.

Addressing this knowledge and skills gap will contribute to achieving national and international goals of eliminating leprosy as a public health concern and safeguarding the rights and dignity of affected individuals.
