Today, 31 March 2026, the Tripartite Cross Border Health Committee Meeting was proudly hosted by Mpumalanga Province, South Africa, bringing together partners with a shared commitment to strengthening healthcare access for cross-border migrants and mobile populations.

The province continues to face key challenges affecting these populations, including late presentation for care, non-attendance at high-risk clinics, unbooked clients, language barriers, lack of proper identification, and incorrect residential information—factors that negatively impact maternal, neonatal, and child health outcomes. It is against this background that the initial meeting was convened on 08 October 2025.

Building on that engagement, today’s discussions focused on revisiting critical action points on maternal, neonatal, and child mortalities, and agreeing on clear short-, medium-, and long-term strategies with defined timeframes.

" We extend our sincere appreciation to International Organization for Migration South Africa, Eswatini, and Mozambique, Save the Children South Africa, as well as the Ministries of Health from Mozambique and the Kingdom of Eswatini for their continued collaboration and dedication.

"It was indeed a very fruitful and productive meeting as we continue working together to improve health outcomes across our borders, said Dr Cheryl Nelson, Chief Director Primary Health Care; Mpumalanga health.

PHC Hard Skills Training Successfully Concludes in Emalahleni

The Primary Healthcare (PHC) Hard Skills Performance Management Pilot Training was successfully launched and concluded at the ANEW Highveld Hotel in Emalahleni from 23–27 March 2026.

Led by the National Department of Health, in partnership with the Gauteng and Mpumalanga Departments of Health, the training sought to strengthen critical competencies necessary for improved health service delivery at primary healthcare level. The programme was supported by Aceso Global Joint Learning Network, AMREF Health Africa, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

This initiative was funded by the Aceso Global – Joint Learning Network (JLN) and AMREF Kenya, with curriculum development led by National Department of Health fellows, including Ms. C Ngoepe. The development process was undertaken in collaboration with provincial representatives from the Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH), represented by Mr. Ratsietsi Makua, and the Mpumalanga Department of Health (MPUDoH), represented by Ms. Mary Kekana, alongside independent consultants.

Over the five-day period, participants were equipped with practical skills aimed at enhancing performance management and service delivery.

Key focus areas included:

• Basic Microsoft Word and Excel skills
• Virtual meeting facilitation
• Report writing
• Data management
• Quality improvement methodologies
• Health outcomes mini-projects
• Rollout, sustainability, and monitoring & evaluation (M&E) planning

In her closing remarks, Dr Nelson underscored the importance of implementation, stating:
“Skills are only as valuable as their application.”

The successful conclusion of this pilot marks a significant step towards strengthening Primary Health Care systems. Appreciation is extended to all partners, facilitators, and participants whose commitment and collaboration made this initiative a success.
