It’s RSV season! Another great informative share by Dr Nadia Khan.

Do you know what it RSV is?
Have your children had RSV?

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) causes seasonal outbreaks of respiratory tract illness throughout the world. In South Africa the RSV season is between February and June.

Who does it affect?
RSV causes acute respiratory tract illness in persons of all ages. It is the most common cause of lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) in children younger than one year and the most common cause of medically attended LRTI in children younger than five years. Almost all children are infected by two years of age, and reinfection is common.

Who are at risk for severe infection?
RSV has the potential to cause severe LRTI in certain high-risk groups: Children

In the last week I’ve seen 4 cases of head injuries. All were minor but all resulted in major stress for the parents. So I thought I’d do a quick summary of when you should take your child in to the emergency room in the case of a head injury.

Children recover from most bumps on the head without problems.
However, you should call a doctor or nurse if your child has hit their head and the injury was more than a light bump.
You should go to the ER right away if your child hurt their head and:

⚠️ Fell from a height taller than 100-150cm’s
⚠️ Is younger than 6 months old
⚠️ Throws up more than once
⚠️ Passes out (or has seizures)
⚠️ Has a headache that is really bad or gets worse over time (little children will be continuously crying or irritable and cranky)
⚠️ Has trouble walking, talking, or seeing, seems confused, or there is a change in behaviour
⚠️ Is still dizzy after a while
⚠️ Has a cut that keeps bleeding after you put pressure on it for 10 minutes
⚠️ Is weak or numb in any body part
⚠️ Has trouble waking up
⚠️ Was hit really hard or with something moving very fast
⚠️ Has blood or watery fluid coming out of the nose or ears

Most parents have a story of the first time their child had a head injury from a fall. My son fell off the couch when he was 4 months old. It’s crazy how quickly it happens! The absolute panic I experienced in those minutes following the injury are scarred in my brain forever. Let me know your story, if you have one!
