Recently, our volunteers took on one of the most demanding courses on the NSRI calendar, the Swift Water Training weekend at the Breede River.

Led by Training Officer Dean Wegerle and supported by our training team, crews faced strong currents, unpredictable conditions and even a nighttime rescue exercise. The goal was simple but vital: to build the knowledge, skill and respect needed to work safely in powerful river environments.

Volunteers described the weekend as physically tough but deeply rewarding. They returned home stronger, more confident and united by the camaraderie that defines Sea Rescue. 💙

.🌊 55 years of service 🌊

In 1966, a young teenager stood on the shoreline, watching the SA Seafarer disaster unfold. That moment changed his life. It sparked a calling that would see Howard Godfrey dedicate more than half a century to saving lives at sea.

From crew member to station commander, mentor, and now Honorary Life Governor, Howard’s journey is proof that volunteering is more than duty; it becomes family.

Today, we celebrate 55 years of service, courage, and heart from this remarkable man. Thank you, Howard.

🚨This Past Weekend🚨

Our crew rolled up their sleeves for some serious theory training 🗺.
From chart work to plotting drift patterns, they tackled the calculations that help us locate a person or object in the water, factoring in wind, currents, and drift.

These skills form the backbone of every rescue operation. It’s not just about being out at sea, but about understanding the science and precision behind search patterns and navigation.

The crew work hard at sharpening these vital skills, because when every second counts, preparation makes all the difference.

🎉🏆 A Night of Proud Achievements at Station 18 Melkbosstrand 🏆🚤
It’s always an honor for the whole station when one of our own reaches their goals and earns their crew badge. These badges aren’t just for show, they represent months (and often years) of dedication, training, and perseverance.

We celebrated the following crew members’ incredible milestones on Monday night:

Nardo Groenewald -- Shore Controller Badge
Alex Arnott -- Crew Badge

What makes this moment even more special is the deep family ties behind the achievements:

Nardo is part of a tri-family crew, with his wife Elisma and son Tayden also serving at Station 18.

Alex’s father, Alistair, and his brother, Josh, are also qualified crew members.

Well done, Nardo and Alex, your dedication inspires us all.

With skills, training, and strong leadership as our foundation, we’re able to do what we do best.

🚤 A Big Milestone for Shaun Smith 🎉

On Monday evening, Station 18 Melkbosstrand proudly celebrated Shaun Smith achieving his Class 4 Coxswain Badge. This is a significant step in his NSRI journey.

Earning this badge takes commitment, countless training hours, and the ability to lead a crew with skill and confidence.

Shaun’s accomplishment was made even more special with his family present to share in the proud moment.

Well done, Shaun! We’re proud to have you at the helm, and we thank you for your dedication. 💛
