Trauma can profoundly impact the brain, particularly its wiring related to emotional responses and relationships. When someone experiences trauma, the brain shifts from a state of connection and trust toward a state of hypervigilance and protection, often as a survival mechanism. This can make it difficult to navigate healthy relationships because the brain is more focused on preventing further harm than fostering trust or intimacy.

For those who have been wounded, relationships may trigger fears or defensive behaviors. Instead of engaging with openness, they may expect rejection, betrayal, or hurt—consciously or unconsciously. The nervous system, having been rewired by trauma, may react to perceived threats even when none are present.

Healing from trauma often involves re-establishing safety within the self and learning to build secure, trusting connections again. This can take time and require patience, understanding, and sometimes therapeutic support. Through healing, individuals can gradually shift from protection to connection, making healthy relationships more accessible.

Teaching children how to navigate and move through their emotions is a LIFE skill—it teaches them how to build RESILIENCE! Helping them understand those emotions and analyze them will give them the space to learn from the anxiety.

Let's teach them how to move through their emotions, which is a way to empower them to express themselves in healthy ways.

It will help them recognize that it’s a process their emotions are a journey of exploration.

Hopefully, this gives you a good visual about the process and will help you give them a tangible way to move through their emotions.

Defiance often pushes a parent's buttons. After all, we're supposed to be in charge, right? Defiance rubs our nose in the fact that we can't really control another person, whether he's three or thirteen unless we use force. And who wants to be that parent?

And when we overreact to defiance, we escalate the battle because force creates resistance, either openly or in a passive-aggressive form. It's ultimately a losing strategy. (You might win the battle, but you'll lose the war.)

So what can a parent do about defiance?
Kids are defiant for a reason: they feel controlled and pushed around, and they need some positive ways to experience power, autonomy and agency in their lives.

A defiant child may reject the parent at this moment because they feel disconnected from them. This may mean the relationship needs some repair work, or maybe the child is in "fight or flight" and simply needs some time to move back into regulation so the adult no longer looks like the enemy.

Punishment only makes the disconnection worse. It feels unfair, creates more upset and disconnection, and pushes kids towards more defiance in one form or another. Defiance is solved with connection, not correction.

ℹ️🌿 THE MOST DIFFICULT EMOTION: SHAME, DISCONNECTION, COURAGE AND LOVE |

We seem to be soft-wired to feel close to one another. We’re designed to give each other comfort and support. We’ve evolved to nurture and care for one another, to open our hearts to the people we love.

Yet in relationships, too often we feel frustration, anxiety, and distance. What’s going on? What gets in the way of the closeness and connection we long for?

One of the things that gets in the way is shame.
