Visual field patterns are some of the most valuable localisation tools in eye care.
Interpreting them correctly can be the difference between diagnosing early glaucoma, identifying chiasmal compression, or recognising optic nerve disease before significant damage occurs.
We've created a concise Visual Field Loss Patterns infographic that highlights three high-yield defects clinicians encounter:
🔹 Bitemporal field loss → suggests chiasmal involvement (e.g., pituitary lesions)
🔹 Arcuate or nasal-step defects → strongly associated with glaucoma
🔹 Central/centro-cecal scotomas → often macular or optic-nerve related
These patterns help guide referral urgency, imaging decisions, and interdisciplinary coordination between optometry, ophthalmology and primary care.
