“Listening changes lives. Asking the right question changes everything.” One of the not-so-easy skills to learn in Kinesiology is how to ask the right questions!
Sounds simple, right? Until you’re in class. This is the classic Level 1 moment:
A student looks up at their learning partner, eyes wide, brain empty, and says:
“Uh… so… what do I say now?” Yep it happens, often!
These are common too -
• Listening… but only so you can respond (not listening at all)
• Interrupting halfway through because you’ve already figured it out
• Offering helpful advice no one asked for
• And the BIG no-no, telling someone what to do like a boss!
Oh my word! So how does one learn to ask the right question in Kinesiology?
A question that gathers information, deepens understanding, offers insight, without imposing, directing, fixing, or accidentally turning into a life coach with opinions?
Now for the serious bit (this is where the magic actually happens)
Asking the right questions is one of the core skills of Kinesiology. It’s how we gain insight, how we understand what’s really going on, and how we support change, without bias, judgement, or agenda.
This skill is taught in class but it becomes intuitive only with practice, patience, presence and paying attention. It’s why being truly present in class matters. In class, you learn not only from those who ask questions beautifully but also from those who don’t. Learning what not to ask, and how not to ask it, is just as valuable.
I’ve even had students say: “Wait, say that again. I want to write down every question you just asked so I can learn how to do that?”
Why how you ask matters
In Kinesiology, we move away from limiting “Why?” questions, which often keep people stuck justifying the problem and instead focus on “What” and “How” questions.
What and how questions remove bias, encourage exploration, allow the conscious and subconscious mind to organise information and open the door to solutions
So instead of “Why do you do this?”, We ask: “What do you want?” “What’s important to you about this?” “How will you know when you’ve got it?” “What’s getting in the way?” “What resources do you already have?” “What could you do differently next time?”
And finally, “What’s the first baby step you can take to achieve the result you want?”
The last question alone turns insight into action.
And here’s the thing, these aren’t just Kinesiology skills, they are life skills. They make better practitioners, yes, but they also make better listeners, partners, parents, leaders, and humans.
That’s why learning Kinesiology is life-changing at any age. Most of our students are adult women. Men make excellent Kinesiopractors® too. And for gap-year students, Kinesiology builds confidence, emotional intelligence, a powerful skill set and personal growth that shapes their future.
Our branch of Kinesiology was developed by Dr Dewe, a medical doctor, alongside his wife Joan, grounding our work in a strong scientific foundation while honouring the wisdom of the body.
