TOPIC: Menopause matters: it's not just hot air

Dr. Avril Moodley is a dynamic Specialist Obstetrician and Gynaecologist. Her journey in the medical field began with her graduation from Walter Sisulu University in 2004, and her love for Obstetrics and Gynaecology was solidified during her community service in Ermelo, Mpumalanga.

With years of experience working as a Senior Medical Officer in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Pediatrics at Wentworth Hospital and Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, Dr. Moodley went on to specialize at the University of Cape Town Where she became a Fellow of the College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 2012.

Dr Moodley went on to obtain a Master of Medicine (MMed) Degree from the University of Cape Town , in obstetrics and gynaecology in 2013 achieving a distinction in the dissertation component.

In 2020 Dr. Moodley obtained a HarvardX Certificate for a course titled - The Health Effects of Climate Change.

In 2023 she qualified as a Menopause Society certified Menopause Practitioner from the formerly known North American Menopause Society.

Since 2013, she has been in private practice, dedicating her career to helping women achieve optimal health. With her passion and expertise in women’s health and preventative medicine, Dr Moodley is committed to providing exceptional care and support to empower women. She is also known for her poetry as well as her adventurous spirit being a qualified padi open water diver.

Our Thursday morning presentation by Prof Veronica Ueckermann

TOPIC: Infectious diseases at the crossroads of Art and Science

Prof Veronica Ueckermann is the clinical and academic head of infectious diseases at the University of Pretoria and Steve Biko Academic Hospital. Her baseline speciality is Internal medicine; she obtained her fellowship in critical care and holds a PhD in infectious diseases. In 2023 she completed her global clinical research fellowship at Harvard university.

As a clinician scientist, Prof Ueckermann’s research is focussed on HIV, TB and airborne infectious diseases in a one health context, with a Web of Science H index of 26. She is the chair of the SBAH AMS committee, serves on Gauteng AMS and the guidelines subcommittee. She is an examiner for the College of physicians of the CMSA and serves on the UP MMed and PhD committees. She is passionate about translating research into clinical practice to better outcomes for her patients.

On this Nelson Mandela International Day, we are delighted to announce our partnership with the skills development project in Skirlek in the east of Pretoria. Headed by sister Ida Colombo, the project aims to train women in skills such a crochet and beadwork and has recently added soap making as an additional skill. In this blog post, sister Ida shares more about the project.

I’m truly honored to be speaking at the International Travel Medicine Conference in New Orleans on the 15th of May at 11:15 AM.

I will be sharing a 45-minute keynote on my personal journey — "The Boy Who Never Gave Up" — a story of resilience, purpose, and transformation.

Ahead of my talk, my book "The Boy Who Never Gave Up" will be available for sale and display on the 13th and 14th of May at the conference.

Our Thursday morning presentation by Dr Lara Greenstein of the South African Geriatrics Society

TOPIC: Practical approach to major neurocognitive disorder and behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia.

Dr Greenstein obtained her undergraduate and postgraduate degrees from the University of the Witwatersrand. She runs the geriatric services at Helen Joseph Hospital and founded Gauteng’s first public hospital fracture liaison service. She is the vice president of the South African Geriatrics Society where she advocates for advancing geriatric teaching across the country. With a passion to enhancing care for older adults, Dr Greenstein is dedicated to educational initiatives in local forums and across Africa. She is currently supervising a number of MMED projects in geriatrics and is pursuing the Postgraduate Diploma in Health Science Education to further refine her educational skills. She is the academic head of division of geriatric medicine at the University of the Witwatersrand.

Sanet completed her BPharm degree in 2007 at the North West University (NWU. She went on to complete her post graduate studies MSC Med in Clinical Pharmacy in 2016 at the Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU). Sanet joined Mediclinic Midstream team in 2015 as the Clinical Pharmacist and is currently still based there. She is an active member of South African Society of Clinical pharmacist (SASOCP) and had the privilege to present 2 posters at the 2023 SASOCP conference, Sanet remains a lifelong learner with a passion to improve patient outcomes as part of the multidisciplinary team.
