On this Nelson Mandela International Day, we are delighted to announce our partnership with the skills development project in Skirlek in the east of Pretoria. Headed by sister Ida Colombo, the project aims to train women in skills such a crochet and beadwork and has recently added soap making as an additional skill. In this blog post, sister Ida shares more about the project.

I’m truly honored to be speaking at the International Travel Medicine Conference in New Orleans on the 15th of May at 11:15 AM.

I will be sharing a 45-minute keynote on my personal journey — "The Boy Who Never Gave Up" — a story of resilience, purpose, and transformation.

Ahead of my talk, my book "The Boy Who Never Gave Up" will be available for sale and display on the 13th and 14th of May at the conference.

Our Thursday morning presentation by Dr Lara Greenstein of the South African Geriatrics Society

TOPIC: Practical approach to major neurocognitive disorder and behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia.

Dr Greenstein obtained her undergraduate and postgraduate degrees from the University of the Witwatersrand. She runs the geriatric services at Helen Joseph Hospital and founded Gauteng’s first public hospital fracture liaison service. She is the vice president of the South African Geriatrics Society where she advocates for advancing geriatric teaching across the country. With a passion to enhancing care for older adults, Dr Greenstein is dedicated to educational initiatives in local forums and across Africa. She is currently supervising a number of MMED projects in geriatrics and is pursuing the Postgraduate Diploma in Health Science Education to further refine her educational skills. She is the academic head of division of geriatric medicine at the University of the Witwatersrand.

Sanet completed her BPharm degree in 2007 at the North West University (NWU. She went on to complete her post graduate studies MSC Med in Clinical Pharmacy in 2016 at the Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU). Sanet joined Mediclinic Midstream team in 2015 as the Clinical Pharmacist and is currently still based there. She is an active member of South African Society of Clinical pharmacist (SASOCP) and had the privilege to present 2 posters at the 2023 SASOCP conference, Sanet remains a lifelong learner with a passion to improve patient outcomes as part of the multidisciplinary team.

TOPIC: CYSTIC FIBROSIS

Sarah Walters is an HPCSA registered genetic counsellor and medical scientist. She currently holds the position of Principal genetic counsellor at Ampath Laboratories. She has over 20 years of experience in counselling clients in various genetic conditions from prenatal, to post-natal, late onset disorders and cancers amongst others. She is also involved in lab work analysis in sequencing and array CGH. She has a particular interest in educating other healthcare professionals in Human Genetics and the intricacies of new genetic testing and their applications. She brings teaching and mentoring expertise from instructing medical students at the University of Witwatersrand. She is also currently the training co-ordinator for intern medical scientists in Genetics at the NRL Genetics laboratory. She serves as an assessor, moderator and site assessor for the HPCSA. She has also presented at many local and international conferences. She has worked extensively in both state and private with children, adults and families with cystic fibrosis. She is currently finalising her PhD.

TOPIC: The link between gut health, immunity and chronic diseases

Dr. Magriet du Plooy is a highly respected paediatrician with over 25 years of clinical experience. She earned her MBChB from the University of Pretoria in 1995, followed by specialized training in paediatrics, obtaining her FC Paed (SA) and MMed (Paed). She further enhanced her expertise with a Diploma in Child Health and certification from the Medical Council of Canada.

In 2004, Dr. du Plooy relocated to Canada, where she practiced as a consultant paediatrician at East Kootenay Regional Hospital and later at Red Deer Regional Hospital in Alberta. During her 18-year tenure in Canada, she developed a special interest in neurodevelopmental and gastrointestinal disorders, deepening her understanding of the intricate connection between gut health and overall well-being. She returned to South Africa permanently in November 2021 and currently practices at Midstream Mediclinic Hospital.

Recognizing the critical role of gut health in disease prevention and management, Dr. du Plooy founded CureHealth in April 2024. CureHealth offers an integrative, science-based approach to optimizing patient health through a multidisciplinary program led by a physician, functional dietician, and psychologist.
Dr. du Plooy has been recognized for academic excellence, receiving the Council of Psychiatrists of South Africa Medal in 1995 for being the top final-year medical student in psychiatry, as well as the Rhône-Poulenc Rorer Prize for outstanding achievement in psychiatry from 1993 to 1995.

Beyond her medical career, she enjoys wildlife photography, snowboarding, cycling, camping, and fishing. She also values quality time with her husband and their 8-year-old twins.

Her commitment to excellence continues to drive innovation in patient-centered care, bridging traditional medicine with functional health solutions.
