In many cases, this condition can’t be prevented. 𝐄𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐠𝐧𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐜𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥. An untreated intestinal obstruction can be fatal.🚨

When and how should you treat a cyst? First of all: 𝐃𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐨𝐩 𝐢𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟!

Small cysts that don’t cause cosmetic or functional problems are usually best left alone. 🌋 When a cyst is 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐥𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐝, 𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐬 𝐛𝐢𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐫, 𝐢𝐬 𝐫𝐮𝐩𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐫 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝, these are the treatment options:

💦 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞: your doctor makes a small cut in the cyst and expresses the contents. This is relatively quick and easy, but cysts often recur after this treatment.

🪡 𝐓𝐨𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐞𝐱𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧: Surgical excision removes the entire cyst, preventing recurrence. Your doctor may recommend first treating the inflammation (with antibiotics, steroids, or incision and drainage), performing the excision after inflammation resolves.

𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐈 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐫 𝐚 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐚 𝐢𝐟 𝐢𝐭’𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐧? Because research shows that hernias that don’t cause symptoms at first usually become problematic later on!

😤 When hernias become symptomatic, there is a higher risk of 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 and the hernia can become incarcerated or strangulated.

𝐈𝐭’𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐫 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐚𝐬 while you are 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐲 𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐚. Waiting until you’re in your seventies or eighties makes the surgery more risky.

🚨 If you can feel a bulge in the groin area, or are feeling pain there, ask your GP to examine you, and refer you to a specialist, or 𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐮𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐚 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧.

Let’s talk 𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐟𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐬, and how Dr Du Plessis repairs them:

𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐥𝐲, 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐭? An a**l fistula is a small tunnel that forms between the end of the bowel and the skin near the a**s. It typically forms when an infection in the a**l glands leads to an abscess that doesn’t fully heal, causing pain, bleeding, and discharge during bowel movements.

🩺 𝐒𝐮𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐟𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐥𝐚, and is almost always required.

🪡 The most common procedure is called a 𝐟𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐲, which involves opening up the full length of the fistula so it can be 𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐮𝐭.

🩹 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲? You should heal within one to two months, the surgery leaving a flat scar.

If you’re experiencing 𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐡𝐚𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐡𝐨𝐢𝐝𝐬 𝐬𝐲𝐦𝐩𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐬 (painful bowel movements, blood in your stool, chronic constipation, or hard stool) in these 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐬, these seasonal factors may be contributing towards winter piles flare-ups:

🛋️ 𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐩𝐡𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐲 - People tend to move less in winter, and lack of exercise can contribute to constipation, a major trigger for haemorrhoids.

🥘 𝐖𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐝𝐬 are often lower in fibre, which can lead to harder stools and straining during bowel movements.

💧 𝐑𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞 - People may drink less water when it’s cold, which also increases the risk of constipation.

Dr Du Plessis recommends that you 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐲𝐥𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬 that combat these winter habits to alleviate your symptoms.

Stop postponing your colonoscopy appointment. 𝐈𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐬𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞.

Dr Du Plessis spoke with Mari Hudson on RSG’s ‘Gesondheid’ show, discussing colonoscopy in depth, reminding us of the importance of early detection, describing how surgeons remove any polyps found, and dispelling old wives’ tales about the procedure. During this conversation, Dr Du Plessis explained that:

1️⃣ 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐩𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐬𝐚𝐟𝐞, 𝐬𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐫𝐞.

2️⃣ Thanks to conscious sedation, you will be asleep and feel no pain during the colonoscopy.

3️⃣ You won’t remember anything about the procedure, during which polyps that could cause cancer can be removed.

4️⃣🚨 If you’re older than 45 experiencing re**al bleeding, don’t ignore your symptoms, and prioritize your health.
