This outdated advice has kept countless patients bed-bound when they should have been moving. The evidence is clear: for most back pain, staying active outperforms prolonged rest.
I see patients who've been lying down for days, waiting for their backs to "heal." Instead, their muscles have stiffened, their pain has spread, and fear of movement has set in – a phenomenon we call kinesiophobia.
The spine is designed for movement. Gentle activity maintains blood flow to healing tissues, prevents muscle weakening, and interrupts the pain-tension cycle that makes everything worse.
This doesn't mean pushing through severe pain or ignoring warning signs. It means avoiding the bed-rest trap. Walking, gentle stretching, and continuing modified daily activities typically aid recovery far better than immobility.
If your back pain has kept you sedentary, let's create a movement plan that respects your pain whilst promoting healing.
