WHEN CAN MY CHILD HANDLE DIABETES ALONE?

Both parents and children are often eager for the child to take over the diabetes care. thats particularly true if the child was diagnosed with diabetes at an early age.

Of course, even young children can help with diabetes-related tasks: taking the insulin out of the refrigerator; putting the strip into the meter; and choosing the insulin site. And certainly a 10 year old can operate today's meters and draw up a single doese of insulin under supervision.

But don't let technical accomplishments make you decide to turn the diabetes care over to your child. Age and manula dexterity are only two indicators of the maturity that diabetes managemant call for.

A recent study found parents tend to turn diabetes control over to their children too early. It also found that it's better to go slow than rush into things.

Look at your child's general stage of development before you make any decisions. Does he or she make his or her own bed, or pick up clothes, do personal laundry, help with dishes?

Would you feel completely safe leaving your child alone for several hours without any supervision?

Ask your child to teach diabetes management to someone else. If your youngster can teach all the daily routines and emergency situations of diabetes care, he or she is probably competent to handle them.

Even then go slow. Transfer diabetes responsibilities one at a time. You might begin with blood glucose monitoring and recording. In a few weeks, move on to insulin injections.

All children want to be independent, and for your child that means taking care of his or her own diabetes management.
