🩼Ozempic works in two ways:
- Firstly, to make one feel full sooner than normal, so one eats less.
- Secondly, it boosts insulin levels higher, so that blood glucose levels drop a bit.
This, in turn, stimulates an increase in two things:
1. Burning of fat to convert to glucose (great!). BUT ALSO:
2. Burning of muscle mass to convert to glucose (not great).
This process is called GLUCONEOGENESIS. (glucose- new-making of)… making NEW glucose inside the body because none is available to eat.
So, the person is successfully losing fat nicely, but because the drug targets BLOOD GLUCOSE LEVELS, more muscle mass is actually being burned than fat! 😳
It’s why the KILOGRAM losses on the scale look so impressive. But only some of that weight loss is fat.
The rest is muscle. 😔
So what, you may say? 🤷🏻♀️
Less muscle 💪🏼? Less ability to burn calories 🔥.
This is the worry when stopping the drug: the rebound weight gain… this result will often mean someone ending up with a HIGHER fat PERCENTAGE than before they took the drug.
Just taking the drug, losing, and stopping it, is something to be careful of.🥺
See a metabolic dietician who can help you work on muscle retention and rebuilding, without the rebound fat gain that seems inevitable with so little muscle mass and low metabolism.
