Improve the way you move

The body is an unbelievable vehicle designed to bend and fold, twist and turn. It’s created to move effectively and efficiently.

When we get injured we naturally restrict movement out of fear of re-injuring and to protect the sight of injury.

Upon initial assessment my focus is to understand how the body is currently restricted vs how it should be moving, with the priority to restore optimal ability to move and the confidence to continue doing so.

Common causes of injuries for the endurance athlete

The endurance athlete usually walks through the door here with very similar symptoms to the previous athlete. Needless to say all cases are unique but often we find trends that present in a similar fashion.

The first questions that we as practitioners will ask is “Has there been any change to your current training routine?”

The common answers conclude in
- Too far too soon
- Too fast too early
- Too much with insufficient recovery
- Recent change in equipment (eg. Shoes, bike, etc)

By coupling a short rest period with small adjustments to load, pace, distance, etc we can ensure the athlete is back at training as early as possible.

When dealing with a triathlete for example we can usually maintain the state of fitness by focusing on the other disciplines will we encourage healing for the provocative discipline.

What is a Biokineticist?

We are continually being posed this question from our clients - unsure of what the role of a Bio actually is.

Biokineticists are specialists recognized by the Health Profession Council of South Africa. We work hand in hand with other medical practitioners such as doctors, surgeons, physiotherapists and chiropractors.

Bio’s focus on end phase rehabilitation of injuries through scientific evaluations and patient-specific exercise program prescription to ensure complete rehabilitation of our patients and to encourage return to sport participation.

Our strength programs are aimed to enhance the performance of our patients and the prevention of re-injury.

Increased range = Increased strength

The shoulder is a highly mobile joint that is designed to perform multiplanar actions.
More often than not we find this joint to be locked up because of capsular tightness, restricted from muscle imbalances pulling the joint into inhibited positions, weak because of dysfunctional movement patterns and a general loss of stability.

Gaining range allows the unlocking the full potential of muscle strength by achieving optimal muscle length. It creates a better pain free movement pattern and allows those muscles to achieve their particular roles.

Is Range of motion limiting your gains??

This week we aim to continue our progressions on how to control our bodies through various positions, to be efficient movers and masters in breathe and to continually be brave to take on new challenges. No equipment needed just a mat and some courage!

Follow the campaign, an online community of visible solidarity and support for survivors and victims of sexual and gender-based violence through exercises, as a symbol of strength and reclaiming a one’s body!
We are here to help share a voice to those who may not be heard.

The session is free and we welcome all participation but should you wish to make a small contribution for the session please make donation towards NPO Lawyers Against Abuse (LvA).

Flexibility vs Mobility

Flexibility and mobility are two commonly used terms in rehab or training and can often misused or mistaken as the other. So let’s break it down for you!

Flexibility is the ability of a muscle or muscle groups to move passively through a range of motion. If you had to lie on your back with your legs straight and someone had to pick up your one leg above your hip, the point at which the leg stops moving would be considered your passive range, or your flexibility.

Mobility is the ability of a joint to actively move through a range of motion. If you had to lie on your back with both legs straight and only use the strength of your one leg to lift it up above your hip, the point at which you couldn’t move the leg anymore would be considered your active range of motion, or your mobility.

Flexibility and mobility have influencing factors on each other but knowing if you need to improve one or the other (or both) will be the determining factor.
