Neglecting posture problems doesn’t just cause a little back pain, it can lead to long-term, serious health issues. As muscle imbalances worsen and your spine falls out of alignment, chronic pain can set in. Over time, this pain may become resistant to basic treatments like stretching or rest.

Poor posture can also affect your mental well-being, contributing to stress, frustration, and even depression. Limited mobility makes everyday tasks harder, which can lower your overall quality of life.

In severe cases, long-term poor posture may cause:
🔸 Arthritis from excessive stress on joints
🔸 Spinal stenosis, where narrowing of the spinal canal compresses nerves
🔸 Nerve compression syndromes, causing numbness, tingling, or weakness in the limbs

The good news? These complications are preventable. By making small changes—like adjusting your workstation, standing up more often, and strengthening your core—you can improve your posture and protect your health for years to come.

Contact your nearest Biokineticist to start your journey to a pain free back.

June is Aphasia Awareness Month. Aphasia is a communication disorder that affects more than 350,000 people in the UK, but do you know why it might happen after a stroke?

The brain is often talked about as having two halves: the left side and the right side. Language skills are usually on the left side. Damage on this side of your brain may lead to language and communication problems, like aphasia. Damage on the right side of your brain may cause other problems, like poor attention or memory.

When different areas of the brain become damaged, they can cause different types of aphasia and associated language problems. These can include receptive aphasia and expressive aphasia.‌

Receptive aphasia is sometimes called Wernicke's aphasia. It happens when the area of your brain that controls language (Wernicke's area) is damaged. Someone with receptive aphasia is usually able to speak well and use long sentences, but those sentences may not make sense. People with receptive aphasia may be unaware that what they're saying does not make sense, so become frustrated when people don't understand them.

Expressive aphasia can be caused by damage to the Broca's area, and Broca's aphasia is one type of expressive aphasia. People with expressive aphasia may only be able to say single words or very short sentences. They can usually be understood, but it can still be very frustrating for the person with aphasia.

You can read more about the types of aphasia, including anomic aphasia and primary progressive aphasia (PPA) on our website - Link in the comments.

Exercise improves memory and mental alertness.

Exercise has been shown to have a profound impact on memory and mental alertness. 🧠 🚨

When we engage in physical activity, our heart rate increases, leading to improved blood flow and oxygen delivery to the brain.

This enhanced circulation promotes the growth of new blood vessels and neurons in the hippocampus of our brains, which is a key region responsible for memory formation and retrieval.

Additionally, exercise stimulates the release of neurotransmitters such as dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine, which are crucial for regulating mood, attention, and learning.

Exercising regularly reduces inflammation and oxidative stress, protecting our brain cells from damage and promoting overall brain health.

These combined effects result in improved cognitive function, enhanced memory consolidation, and heightened mental alertness.

So, lace up your sneakers and get moving to unlock the full potential of your mind!

Prevention and early detection of diseases prove challenging in men since they often neglect routine checkups and will try to avoid or postpone a visit to their healthcare provider when presenting with symptoms.

Men tend to have a higher rate of comorbidities than women.

Comorbidities are diseases that increase our likelihood of death and disability and include the following:
🚹 high blood pressure,
🚹 heart disease,
🚹 obesity,
🚹 and cancer

Men are more prone to heart disease as they accumulate fat in the abdominal area.
Most of the health conditions and diseases burdening men are however treatable and preventable if they are identified early.

As Biokineticist we encourage our male followers to go for regular health screenings from an early age – especially if there is a health risk in the family.

Specific tests to be done:
🚹 Yearly Blood Pressure, Cholesterol, and Diabetes checks.

All these can be done at most Biokinetics practices or your local pharmacies.
From an older age (around 50yrs) depending on family history test for:
🚹 Different types of cancer – do not forget skin cancer.
🚹 Osteoporosis (yes men do suffer from Osteoporosis)
🚹 Eye exams
🚹 Stress ECG’s for your heart function

Exercise has both long- and short-term benefits such as:
🚹 lowering blood pressure,
🚹 improving insulin-sensitivity,
🚹 improving oxygen uptake,
🚹 reducing cholesterol
🚹 promoting healthy bowel movements
🚹 and improving body composition by increasing muscle mass while at the same time reducing fat mass.

If you are avoiding your doctor, start with a Biokineticist who can advise you accordingly.

World Hypertension Day is all about creating awareness among the public regarding the importance of knowing their blood pressure readings.

This year's theme is "Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, Live Longer."

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, remains the leading cause of cardiovascular mortality. Within medical circles, hypertension is known as the "silent killer" and is a more serious condition than commonly perceived.

The World Hypertension League (WHL), an umbrella organization of 85 national hypertension societies and leagues, recognizes that over 50% of the hypertensive population worldwide are unaware of their condition.

Exercise has a positive effect on lowering blood pressure. Studies have shown that a single session of cardiovascular exercise can lead to an immediate decrease in blood pressure just a few hours after exercising.

Biokineticists are healthcare providers who can assist you in developing the most effective exercise program to lower your blood pressure.

Consult a Biokineticist to receive assistance in the treatment of hypertension. Find a Biokineticist near you at www.biokineticssa.org.za.

The human body is designed to MOVE!

Engaging in movement strengthens muscles, joints, and bones, promoting overall physical fitness. It also enhances blood circulation to vital organs, improving their functionality. Additionally, movement increases the heart's capacity to supply oxygen to the body and brain, thereby boosting brain function and mental well-being. Furthermore, it aids in the healing process and contributes to a higher metabolic rate, which can facilitate weight loss.

Being physically active doesn't necessarily require formal exercise routines. It involves incorporating brief periods of movement into your daily life, such as:
- Opting for stairs instead of elevators.
- Parking further from the store entrance to accumulate more steps.
- Performing two minutes of walking on the spot while preparing coffee
- Taking regular breaks from sitting by standing or walking for five minutes
- Incorporating stretching exercises every two hours
- Going for afternoon walks with a friend or spouse

Biokineticists are healthcare professionals who can provide guidance, support, and motivation to help you become more active. They can assist in designing an activity plan tailored to your lifestyle.
