Today's activity focuses on the child in the foundation phase. 📝 Let's spice up homework a bit with this exciting sensory activity!

☀️Fun fact for the day☀️

Reading- and writing is not a natural skill. It was invented by humans and thus does not come natural to all.✒️📜

📌Tip of the day📌

Never underestimate the power of the sensory systems in learning. Think creatively in using movement, touch and hearing during homework. For instance, let your child spell the sight words while jumping on a trampoline. 🪃

🧩Activity of the day🧩

Shaving foam writing

Take one day in the week and let your child write his/her spelling words in shaving foam before writing it with a pencil. Through this the touch sense is also engaged which enhances learning.💡

WHO statement on autism-related issues

The World Health Organization (WHO) emphasizes that there is currently no conclusive scientific evidence confirming a possible link between autism and use of acetaminophen (also known as paracetamol) during pregnancy.

Globally, nearly 62 million people (1 in 127) have autism spectrum disorder, a diverse group of conditions related to development of the brain. Although awareness and diagnosis have improved in recent years, the exact causes of autism have not been established, and it is understood there are multiple factors that can be involved.

Extensive research has been undertaken over the past decade, including large-scale studies, looking into links between acetaminophen use during pregnancy and autism. At this time, no consistent association has been established.

WHO recommends that all women continue to follow advice of their doctors or health workers, who can help assess individual circumstances and recommend necessary medicines.
Any medicine should be used with caution during pregnancy, especially in the first three months, and in line with advice from health professionals.

Also, a robust, extensive evidence base exists showing childhood vaccines do not cause autism. Large, high-quality studies from many countries have all reached the same conclusion. Original studies suggesting a link were flawed and have been discredited.
Since 1999, independent experts advising WHO have repeatedly confirmed that vaccines - including those with thiomersal or aluminum - do not cause autism or other developmental disorders.

Childhood vaccine schedules are developed through a careful, extensive and evidence-based process involving global experts and country input.
The childhood immunization schedule, carefully guided by WHO, has been adopted by all countries, and has saved at least 154 million lives over the past 50 years. The schedule remains essential for the health and wellbeing of every child and every community. These schedules have continually evolved with science and now safeguard children, adolescents and adults against 30 infectious diseases.

Every vaccine recommendation by the Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization (SAGE), an independent advisory group to WHO, is grounded in rigorous review of evidence and carefully designed to offer the best protection against serious diseases and to be delivered when most needed.

When immunization schedules are delayed or disrupted, or altered without evidence review, there is a sharp increase in the risk of infection not only for the child, but also for the wider community.
Infants too young to be vaccinated and people with weakened immune systems or underlying health conditions are at greatest risk.

Autism and neurodevelopmental disorders are among priority mental health and neurological conditions being discussed at the 4th UN High-Level Meeting on NCDs and mental health this Thursday, 25 September.
As a global community, we need to do more to understand the causes of autism and how best to care for and support the needs of autistic people and their families.

WHO is committed to advancing this goal working together with partners including autistic-led organizations and other organizations representing persons with lived experience.
WHO also stands with people who are living with autism and their families, a dignified community entitled to evidence-based considerations free of stigma.

Wasgoedpennetjie son:  Laat jou kind 'n papierbord geel verf en geel wasgoedpennetjies reg rondom vasknyp sodat dit soos 'n son lyk.🌞

In celebration of OT week, here is today's insights which are focusing on babies. 👣

☀️Fun Fact for the day☀️

The 3 Occupational Therapists working at the practice, together has 37 years of experience in the clinical field - most of it with the paediatric population🧑‍🎓

📌Tip of the day📌

Babies' first- and most significant resource of stimulation, is the parents' facial expressions.😁 Thus, don't hold back when talking to- or interacting with your baby. Make sure to also 'talk' with your face by using your eyes, expressions and mouth. 🤪🤭

🧩Activity of the day🧩

Texture Treasure Basket🪺

What you need:
A basket or box with safe items of different textures (soft cloth, wooden spoon, silicone spatula, fluffy sock, crinkly paper).

How to do it:
Sit baby on mom’s lap or floor. Offer one item at a time, letting baby explore with hands and mouth (always supervised). Mom can describe: “This is soft… this is crinkly.”

Sensory input: Touch, proprioception (grasping), and auditory (crinkle sounds).

Happy playing!!!

Friday, the 12th of September, is ADHD awareness day in South Africa. As I was doing research in an attempt to find inspiration for this post, I came across the "Goldilocks and the Bear Foundation." They are doing amazing work - not only in the field of ADHD, but also in a variety of mental health conditions amongst children. Their theme for this year's awareness day is: "Sea of Yellow" and with this post I would like to encourage you to take a look at their website and consider supporting them: www.https://gb4adhd.co.za/

Above mentioned foundation focuses on early identification of ADHD and the appropriate management thereof by means of free screenings and intervention by a multi-disciplinary team. Their website lists some interesting facts about ADHD: (sourced from the website)

5% of all children has got ADHD - that is 1 out of every 20 children.

There are 3 subtypes of ADHD: Hyperactive/Impulsive-; Inattentive-; and Combined type.

Children with ADHD face several difficulties, including social, emotional and academical challenges.

Untreated ADHD can amongst others lead to involvement in substance abuse and dangerous activities, as well as a high percentage of secondary psychological challenges, such as anxiety and depression.

As role players in the community, we as adults all have the responsibility to be gentle towards our children with ADHD and help them achieve their absolute best by supporting- and directing them to the correct channels.

In support of ADHD awareness day, we challenge you to wear something yellow and bust the myths around ADHD - if you don't know facts from fiction, reach out to a healthcare professional who is actively working in this field.

Credit is given to the "Goldilocks and the Bear Foundation".

It is that time of the year again! Pledging for a Santa Shoebox is happening now.
We all look forward to a Christmas spent with family - opening gifts, enjoying a lovely meal. Unfortunately, this is not the reality for so many disadvantaged children and their families.
Please help us to bring a glimmer of joy and hope by donating a shoebox for a child in need.
Get your own children involved by helping you pick out clothes and toys 🧸
Together, a small gesture can make a big impact on the life of as many children as possible 🎅 🎁

1 September. Spring. What an exciting season!! 🪷🌼🪺🐝 Soooo exciting that we actually celebrate it by dressing up and picking flowers!🌱💮🏵️

But, why? Why not the other seasons? Why Spring? My personal opinion...because we still believe in new beginnings and warmer days....☀️

🪻🪻Happy Spring!!🪻🪻

❤️
