Most people wait for pain before they do something about it.
Recently, we saw a patient who did the opposite.
She came in with early stiffness in her fingers and a family history of osteoarthritis. Nothing severe yet, but enough to notice a pattern starting.
Instead of waiting, she wanted to be proactive.
She even asked about using 8 finger splints as a way to support and protect her joints early on.
This is exactly where prevention makes the biggest difference.
Osteoarthritis develops over time and those early signs are often the best opportunity to slow things down.
In occupational therapy, we focus on:
• Supporting joint alignment early (including options like finger splints where appropriate)
• Strengthening the muscles around the joints
• Improving movement patterns to reduce strain
• Helping you maintain function long-term
It’s much easier to protect your joints now than to manage pain later.
If you’re noticing early stiffness or have a family history of osteoarthritis, it’s worth paying attention sooner rather than later.
Start before it becomes something you have to live with.
