Recent studies in South Africa and Uganda found that lenacapavir, a twice-a-year injection, is highly effective at preventing HIV.
This is a big step forward, especially for people who struggle to take a daily pill (PrEP).

Why this matters for South Africa
Young women and adolescent girls remain at the highest risk of HIV. Many women in SA are exposed early in life, and current prevention methods donโt always fit real-life challenges. A long-acting injection could change that.
Is it available in South Africa yet?
Yes โ SAHPRA approved lenacapavir for HIV prevention in October 2025.
The Department of Health plans a phased rollout from 2026, starting in selected primary healthcare facilities. Over time, access is expected to expand as more affordable generic versions become available.
To reach the global goal of reducing HIV as a public health threat by 2030, we need prevention tools that truly work for peopleโs day-to-day lives. Having more options โ pills, injections, condoms, regular testing โ means more people can choose what suits them best. ๐๏ธ
