DON'T BE FOOLED BY SINUS PAIN, MIGRAINS OR EYE STRAIN . THESE CAN ALSO BE THE EARLY SYMPTOMS OF INTERNAL EYE INFECTION (UVEITIS) AND CAN HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH YOUR SINUSES OR YOUR HEAD.
Don’t Ignore These Subtle Eye Warning Signs - especially if you have an autoimmune disease.
Uveitis is a serious inflammation inside the eye and is often linked to autoimmune conditions. What makes it dangerous is that early symptoms can be easy to miss — and the eye may look almost normal at first.
Early warning signs may include:
- A deep, dull ache behind and around the eye, temple, or brow - almost as you've been punched in the eye a few days ago.
- Eye tenderness or sensitivity to pressure (even blinking or touching the eyelid feels uncomfortable)
- Light sensitivity - feels worse even while the eye still looks normal.
- A heavy, strained feeling in the eye.
This may develop to:
- Mild blurred vision or trouble focusing.
- Eye floaters before redness appears.
These deep, aching symptoms are clue to inflammation inside the eye. Once obvious redness, severe pain, or vision changes appear, the condition is usually more advanced.
Untreated uveitis can lead to glaucoma, cataracts, retinal damage, or even permanent vision loss.
If eye pain feels deep, pressure-sensitive, or unusually light-sensitive — even without redness — get your eyes checked promptly. Early treatment can protect your vision and shorten the duration of the disease.
Treatment may include anti-inflammatory eye drops, tablets, or other medication, depending on the cause and severity.
The takeaway
Red, painful, or light-sensitive eyes should never be ignored. If you experience these symptoms, seek professional eye care as soon as possible. Early treatment can make the difference between full recovery and long-term vision problems.
Your eyes matter — listen to them.

KERATOCONUS DOESN'T HAVE TO STEAL YOUR VISION - IF CAUGHT AT AN EARLY STAGE.
Keratoconus is a progressive condition affecting the cornea, the clear front surface of the eye. The cornea gradually thins and protrudes into a cone-like shape, causing visual distortion and reduced vision quality.
The condition typically begins in adolescence or early adulthood and is influenced by genetic and environmental factors, including excessive eye rubbing and chronic eye irritation.
Common symptoms include blurred or distorted vision. Sensitivity to light and glare and ghosting or streaking of lights, or you may need frequent changes in glasses or contact lens prescriptions.
Your optometrist should be able to pick up early signals and refer you to an ophthalmologist (eye specialist) in time.
There is no cure for keratoconus — but progression can be stopped if treated early. Corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL) is the most important treatment in early keratoconus.
This procedure strengthens the cornea, helping to halt further bulging and thinning. When done early, cross-linking can prevent worsening of the cone. It can preserve the corneal shape and reduce the risk of severe vision loss. It can also delay or avoid the need for corneal transpantation.
Importantly, cross-linking should be performed as soon as keratoconus is diagnosed, often before contact lenses are fitted, to protect the cornea long-term.
Regular eye exams are essential
Early diagnosis allows us to intervene at the right time, protecting the cornea and preserving vision for the future.
If you or your child are experiencing changing vision, increasing astigmatism, or frequent prescription changes — don’t wait.
Consult with your optometrist or visit us at Visiomed Eye Laser Clinic for early diagnosis and personalised management of keratoconus.
Early action can make a lifelong difference!

Did you know there’s more than one lens option after cataract surgery? 👁️
Monofocal lenses focus on a single distance,
while advanced lenses are designed for clearer vision across multiple distances.
Small differences. Big impact on how you see the world.

WHEN YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM ATTACKS BOTH YOUR THYROID AND YOUR EYES: Thyroid Eye Disease – a condition not to ignore
Thyroid Eye Disease (TED) is an autoimmune condition linked to thyroid disorders such as Graves’ disease (overactive and enlarged thyroid leading to various disorders like fast heart beat, tremors in hands, weight loss, bulging eyes, etc).
The same antibodies that attack the thyroid can also target tissues around the eyes.
It occurs when the immune system mistakenly causes inflammation and swelling around the eyes — not because of the thyroid gland itself, but because the immune system affects both the thyroid and the eyes.
If left untreated, Thyroid Eye Disease can damage the surface of the eye and, in severe cases, threaten vision.
What helps protect your eyes:
- Good thyroid control. DO those annual checkups with your GP!
- Avoid smoking
- Regular use of lubricating eye drops
- Eye protection from wind and sunlight
- Early assessment by your eye care professional
Early care can prevent long-term damage and protect your vision.

HOW YOUR EYES WORK AND WHY IT IS SO IMPORTANT TO PROTECT THEM
Light enters your eyes and forms an image on the retina at the back of the eye. This image is upside down. The optic nerve sends the image to the brain, which then turns it the right way up and makes sense of what you see.
If the retina is damaged, these messages cannot reach the brain properly. This can lead to vision loss, as seen in conditions such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), glaucoma, and diabetic eye disease.
Regular eye examinations are essential – not only to check if you need glasses, but to detect eye disease early, often before you notice any symptoms. Early detection can save your sight.
Protect your eyes by wearing sunglasses outdoors and using protective eye gear when working with tools, lasers and while welding.
Eat a balanced diet rich in colourful fruit and vegetables, leafy greens, nuts, and Omega-3-rich fish. Avoid smoking.
Your eyes are precious – protect them.

“I’ve Had Cataract Surgery… So Why Do I Still Need Glasses?”
Cataract surgery is incredibly successful – it can truly be life-changing! Colours appear brighter, vision becomes clearer, and everyday tasks feel easier.
However, many patients are surprised to learn that glasses are often still part of the picture – even when the surgery is performed by an excellent surgeon. Understanding this helps manage expectations and makes the overall experience far more satisfying.
During surgery, the natural lens inside your eye, which has become cloudy due to a cataract, is replaced with a clear artificial lens. This restores clarity, but it does not automatically fine-tune your vision. Once your eyes have healed, a refined vision test with your optometrist is still necessary.
The most commonly used lenses are monofocal lenses, which are designed to work best at one distance. Most patients choose distance vision, which is why reading glasses are often needed for fine print. Others prefer to keep glasses on all the time and may choose multifocal glasses, or glasses specifically for computer work after surgery.
Those who would like to reduce their dependence on glasses may qualify for multifocal intraocular lenses, which provide a broader range of vision, or toric lenses if astigmatism is present. These are known as Premium Lenses. Your surgeon will carefully consider your eye health, lifestyle and visual expectations when guiding you through these choices.
The best outcomes happen when patients are informed, involved, and supported by both their surgeon and optometrist. Clear vision is a team effort — and a well-informed patient is always at the centre of it.
We encourage you to bring a family member or friend to your first consultation. A second set of ears can help you absorb and understand all the information provided, ensuring you feel confident about what cataract surgery is really all about.

Did you know? 🎨👁️
Claude Monet’s cataracts changed the way he saw colour shifting his paintings toward warmer, blurred tones.
Many Old Master painters were also exposed to high levels of lead in paints, which is believed to have increased the early onset of cataracts.
After cataract surgery, Monet’s blues and greens returned and so did his earlier style.

THE CAUSE OF YOUR WATERY EYES MAY ACTUALLY BE DUE TO DRY EYES
It sounds confusing, but dry eyes can absolutely cause watery eyes — and it’s a very common complaint.
Your eyes have a tear system that keeps them lubricated. Every time you blink, your eyelids act like windscreen wipers. The difference is that windscreen wipers remove water, while your eyelids spread the tear layer over the surface of your eyes (the corneas) to keep them hydrated and comfortable.
In dry eye disease, one or more of the tear layers does not work properly — most often the oil layer. Your tear film is made up of water, mucus and oil. If the oil glands in your eyelids do not produce enough oil, the tears become too watery, evaporate too quickly, and leave the eyes dry and irritated.
When this happens, the eyes send a distress signal to the brain. The brain responds by telling the tear glands to produce more tears. Instead of helping, these extra tears flood the eyes and spill over — causing watery eyes.
Unfortunately, these are emergency tears. They lack oil and mucus, are poor in quality, and cannot stay on the eye surface long enough to relieve dryness.
This creates a vicious cycle:
• Poor tear quality → dryness
• Dryness → irritation
• Irritation → excessive watery tearing
• Watery tears → still don’t fix the dryness
Lubricating eye drops from a pharmacist or optometrist may relieve symptoms, but they do not treat the underlying cause. Warm compresses on the eyelids can help melt blocked oil in the glands. However, if infection or demodex lice is present, prescription treatment will be needed.
Please visit an optometrist or ophthalmologist for a thorough eye examination. Visiomed Eye Laser Clinic is a private clinic with a team of doctors who can assist patients in Johannesburg. Contact 011 476 3119 to be guided to a doctor in your area.
