Charles Johnson Memorial Hospital hosted prematurity day on the 19th of November 2025 under the "Giving every baby a first start" an urges all pregnant women to access antenatal as early as possible and to follow a healthy lifestyle including avoiding smoking, drinking alcohol or using illegal drugs during pregnancy. This will reduce the risk of pretending labour and premature birth which is leading cause of death in children under the age of 5

CJM Hospital is one of the the hospital that are experiencing problems of babies that are born preterm each year. Preterm is defined as babies born alive before 37 weeks of pregnancy are completed. It is recommended that pregnant women should attend all antenatal care visits or appointments throughout their pregnancy period to enable the health professionals monitor and assess the state of health of both the mother and unborn child in order to identify early signs and symptoms of manageable and life threatening complications such as pre-eclampsia, urinary tract infections and gestational diabetes

Mother's of babies were given gifts and certificates. Staff members of Maternity ward were given certificate of appreciation for serving the lives of these babies

Dr. Nxumalo encourages all expectant mothers to book their first antenatal visit as soon as they know that they are pregnant and to keep attending every check up. Early and regular care allows Healthcare teams to monitor both mother and baby, identity risks early and act quickly giving little ones the best chance to grow strong and health6
